The question I have is what would be generally considered a fair straight-up trade for Martinez?

keeping in mind that Pedro is one of the top few pitchers there are a number of possible combos if not straight up one for one deals that would be reasonable.
Also- I think what bothers us to a degree is the implication that 'we' (the manager who has him) dont 'get' the value of a Pedro, and therefor they should be traded for a pitcher who seemingly has more value i.e. a greater salary.

Agreed, but in an unlimited salary league, Why would I trade Joe Morgan for Robby Alomar.
We are 40 games into the season. Morgan has an OBP of .432
Alomar is .330, so it's not like I'm pissed that Morgan is under achieving.

Petro, I thought, did an excellent job of both reflecting on
the issue and articulating a strong point of view.
I would point out that in some cases, the "Life of Brian" factor
should be considered: some people like to haggle. Its only
one type of negotiation, and not the best, but it is legit. For
these people, a first offer is only an opening position. (In
the life of Brian sense, they should be insulted if you accepted
the opening offer).
Still, this does not seem to be the case here. And haggling
on 1:1 trades don't seem to open many options, not that I have
much experience here.

Full disclosuere on the joke...
I am "okay" with the Red Sox, but I moved there and my
first team is the Twins. So flame at me for taking a shot
at Bostonians, I am not one of them.
I can't say I care much any more if the Red Sox win or
lose, but I did get a chuckle out one bloggers comment
about how the Red Sox look more like the Yankees:
