trade announcement and affect on cap

Postby franky35 » Thu Nov 17, 2011 3:42 pm

LA Dodgers trade free agent Bobby Bonds to Red Sox for Yaz and Jerry Moses.

Bonds is a free agent, so he counts against the Red Sox' free agent budget. Yaz and Moses are not free agents, so they don't count against the Dodgers' free agent budget. The trade frees up about 8 mil in free agent cash for the Dodgers.

The Red Sox started with a free agent budget of 33.23 mil. After subtracting salaries for Bonds, Fernandez and Roy White, they have 33.23 - 21.76 = 11.47 mil to spend on free agents. The Red Sox have signed 3 free agents, so they can sign up to 5 more.

By the way, the Red Sox are now interested in trading down in the draft in exchange for a non free agent, such as a decent pitcher.

Great trade by the Dodgers since it doesn't count against their free agent cap but does effect Boston. The Dodgers essentially just got a free $11 Million dollars worth of players.

But it brings up the following question:

It seems that it would be possible to trade free agents for regular players and have a total team salary over $100M. Is there any total cap?

A simpler example would be if the Orioles traded for someone of higher value. This would put them above 94.16 Million and they could actually trade enough to go over $100M.....Is this o.k.????

The league cap is $100 mil. We are playing in a $100 mil league, so it is a hard cap; HAL won't let you go over.

thanks.... just checking because the Dodgers are now essentially playing with an extra 11M in roster and if they used all of their free agent money they could be pushing $100M.

side question for anyone that may know:

I sent an email to TSN asking them to transfer one of the credits I bought in the recent sale over to the 1969 game (I used the Contact Us feature). Does anyone know how long it takes for them to move it over?

Losing Bonds was tough! But I needed a catcher and for some reason the AL West has some really subpar catching for the 3-8 draft. I had to grab Moses where I could. Yaz has been a well-known under-achiever in the '69 game. I'm just hoping his great defense will help my pitching and he can bat over .250 in Dodger Stadium. I may even platoon him with Mota. Sacreligious I know!
