And Then The Trades That Are Declined

Or he can have only a mouse to decline but no keyboard to respond.

Or he can have some type of myopia that doesn't allow him to see the options at bottom of the screen

Or....

Devil's advocate- someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with, just for the sake of argument.

A bystander's take

Postby The Last Druid » Mon Nov 21, 2011 7:50 pm

I'm in this league. Nev hoarded the top pitching. The other guy, middle infielders. Nev's starting staff:
Pedro Martinez
Greg Maddux
Pete Alexander
Three Finger Brown
Roger Clemens
Satchel Paige

London Ripper's staff:
Bender
Gibson
Gooden
Chance
Gomez

I ended up with a bad team and got only two of my top seven picks. Basically got whipsawed between the hoarders and Saltman, the latter competing with me for the small ball pool. Losing Pedro, Collins and Wagner hurt. I got Speaker, my first pick and Tiant who might have been my fifth or sixth pick. So I'm kind of collateral damage here. Got Arod and Biggio instead of Wagner and Collins. That was actually lucky. Not a fan of A-Rod in Forbes '65 though, nor Biggio in that park either.

Now hoarding and trading is a viable strategy. It's kind of annoying when you are on the receiving end but it is what it is.

But here's the thing. The Rippers need an OF. The have Hack as DH. Their CF is Lynn (platoon) and they have Kaline and Gwynn in the corners. Very marginal players at 200M. If it were me I would trade Wells and Collins for two corner outfielders. I would not prioritize upgrading my pitching until I saw what the OF market will bring.

In short, I would have turned down the trade for Pete as well. I might have said something like, "later -maybe" with a brief explanation if I were interesting in keeping the pitcher upgrade option open. The other factor is, I prefer not to reinforce hoarding as a strategy. So I might have turned it down anyway figuring Nev is screwed unless he can unload all his excess top pitching. Another consideration is that both teams are in the same division.

So that's my vantage point. Just more context!

I like Petrosians thinking. I could live with that rotation and if I could swap those middle infielders for quality corner outfielders of comparable price would definitely go for that instead.

hmm, wondering why I don't do 200m autodraft. Oh yeah, this is why.

Nothing says flush a 20 like an unlucky 200m autodraft.

Corner outfielders are plentiful here in 200m even if you have to go platooning. To turn down Pete and subsequently Pedro for Wells is a mistake imo

With [b:dfe4fcee41]McGwire[/b:dfe4fcee41], [b:dfe4fcee41]Hornsby[/b:dfe4fcee41], [b:dfe4fcee41]Brett[/b:dfe4fcee41], [b:dfe4fcee41]Honus Wagner[/b:dfe4fcee41], [b:dfe4fcee41]Hack Wilson[/b:dfe4fcee41] and [b:dfe4fcee41]Fred "Destroys righties" Lynn[/b:dfe4fcee41] he's got some bats, even [b:dfe4fcee41]Fisk [/b:dfe4fcee41]is ok at C....Also has[b:dfe4fcee41] E. Collins[/b:dfe4fcee41] as trade bait to get another bat....

but his sps Gibson, Gooden (sux) Bender and Chance are average at best in 200m and with a bullpen of Rivera, Face and Brewer (yuk)

Looks to me like pitching, not a #7 hitter is what he needs.

actually no one except me likes Fisk I think.

But I agree, to get one of the top 3 starters for someone who is surplus is something you gotta do.

Just because you have surplus SS doesn't mean someone is going to trade you for one. When someone overpays by offering one of the top 3 SP, you are crazy to not do it.

It does not really matter how abundant corner OFers are it only matters what can be traded for and/or what is on FA list. If there is nothing on the list then he may need to use his spare middle infielders as collateral.

But here is a thought.

If he has Gwynn and Kaline he could consider that as a RF platoon. Or he could platoon Winfield and Gwynn which would only leave him needing someone to platoon with Kaline in LF. Expensive but at 200 mil something that can be done.

Then if he can get a good LFer for Collins that should form an acceptable OF.

Then he slots Alexander in to rotation and attempts to swap one of his other 3 RH SPers for a comparable lefty to give him a more balanced rotation. Not saying run those as a pure 5 man rotation but having that balance with * starters allows you some flexibility to do some matching up to take advantage of unbalanced parks on the road or weak against one side or the other.

Improved offense and improved rotation. :D

The again this is just fun discussion for me. At end of the day it is still that manager's decision. He does need to be careful though to not be so indecisive that he ends up going through season wasting over 20 mil on Collins and Wells to ride the bench. Even in a high cap league that is not good strategy.

Another possibility is he plans on using Collins/Wagner in small ball parks and Hornsby/Wells in bomber parks. A waste of money but ...

To me, one of the biggest issues is just a simple lack of communication-
and perhaps a bit more...

BEST CASE SCENARIO:
Petro gave a thought on why a person [b:ba68b3d397]might[/b:ba68b3d397] turn down a trade that in most cases would be considered an overpayment;
So there is a possible reason that makes some sense- and actually after looking again- I do agree thats a HUGE need.
but if someone sends you good trade ideas and a [i:ba68b3d397]written note[/i:ba68b3d397]- isn't it just poor etiquette not to respond?

WORSE CASE SCENARIO:

Knowing the person in the league I have to question the motivation-
If you have an abundance of talent and a good team then I can see hording stuff but...
My mind goes to 'are you paying $20 just to try and screw me, because both of our teams are going to suck.
YOU dont have pitching and I dont have an SS or whatever, why not trade?
Or respond and say- Im really lookn for OFs or whatever...

SO I'm asking, why not? Because if it were me, you would at least TRY and make a deal with SOMEONE for WHATEVER you think you need.
Yet you Dont- WHY?
