This was my first draft other than the free trial. I got some guys I wanted but I think I have too many bums for hitters. I have absolutely no power which I know needs to be addressed. I didn't get a lot of guys I assumed would be available that were on my draft and I haven't heard of several people I ended up with.

Anybody got advice on how to salvage this?

UPDATED:

So I let go of John Franco and a slew of backup RF's. I added Dale Murphy, Don Baylor, and Bob Horner to get some power in my lineup. I added Willie Wilson and Gary Templeton to improve my defense up the middle. I kept my starting pitching in tact on accident. I had attempted to drop Nolan Ryan and Jack Morris and add Fernando Valenzuela. It would have fit too.

My rotation would have been Clemens, Valenzuela, Ojeda and Langston. It was actually my turn to pick and I got shafted by the auto waiver wire. My top two picks had been already taken. I had set up a third pick just to free up space I would have needed if my top two had gone through. Neither had gone through so I had plenty of space. It was my turn and I would have claimed Valenzuela but it did the 3rd pick I no longer needed and I actually dumped a minimal amount of salary as my first move lol. Then Valenzuela got picked shortly after. I didn't get any of the bats I had tried for on waivers including Barfield, and Hrbeck. I then tried to salvage some kind of power as my leading HR hitter before waivers had 14 and that is Fisk who probably won't see the lineup much due to his defense.

People added at waivers:

Dennis Powell RP
Tim Stoddard RP
1B Bob Horner
1B/DH Don Baylor
SS Gary Templeton
CF Willie McGee
RF Dwight Evans

Players released:
John Franco RP
RF Terry Puhl
Rick Leach
Cecil Cooper
Dwayne Murphy
and a couple other reserve RF's I actually don't even remember from 1986.

First things first.

Gotta learn how to post a team link.

Go to your league statistics page.

Click on TEAM at the top.

Find your team, click it.

The in the address bar on top, right click in that space, copy that link, and paste it here. The team link MUST have user_id= at the end of it.

thanks for that. I knew it didn't look right before.

The end of the waiver period is Thanksgiving at 5pm for me. I especially welcome any advice given before then lol

This team needs a lot of work. First big thing is to ignore names and looks primarily at numbers/stats. You have a lot of guys who used to be great before 1986.

1. Your number #4 starter needs to be * starter so you can go with a 4 man rotation. You may have spent a little to much on pitching, but I like your top 2 starters. Probably also cut down to 10 pitchers -- you want to keep most of the innings with your starters.
2. On offense, Raines and Boggs will get on base a lot but noone will ever drive them home. They are about your only 2 keepers -- maybe platoon leach/wohlford at DH. You definately need some power. Maybe allocate about $3-4M to each of your other 6 spots (C, 1b, 2b, ss, CF, RF) and find the best you can get at each. Another platoon wouldn't hurt. Need solid defense at SS, 2nd, CF & C (prefer 1 or 2 range).

OUCH, I agree...u have your work cut out for you.

Your homepark favors right handed HR's. 1-10
And favors both hitters for singles.

So, your SP's need to have no *BPHR's on their cards vs. RH's.
ie. Danny Darwin, Moose Haas etc...

Same theory for most of your RP's.

Hitter need to hit RH's well, particularly RH hitters.
ie. Mike Fitzgerald, Yount, Dewey Evans etc...

Lefty hitters need either natural HOMERUNS and/or lots of doubles/OBP.

Yes, what these other guys said....

Your three big money guys (Clemens, Rains, Boggs) are not particularly good fits for Fenway. Morris is a terrible fit--drop him immediately. Ojeda and Langston are decent fits, but most guys don't like two lefty starters at Fenway.

I would probably keep either Rains or Boggs (but not both) and look for some right handed power guys to complement left handed high OBP and Average guys with some speed. I don't think two 10M+ guys works well very often--you need to spread the money around your lineup a bit more.

I kinda like Murphy, actually, but he's injury prone and needs a good backup.

thanks guys,

Rock and Wade are my two favorite players growing up as I lived halfway between Montreal and Boston and went to games at both Fenway and Olympic Stadium a lot. It is a tough call picking one to drop. Rock actual threw a ball to me that he caught crashing into the wall when I was like 7 and it was quite the thrill. But my dog is named Boggs and I watched his whole career as Sox games were on my TV and not Expos games.

This is a tough decision. I appreciate the advice about the BP HR's and I will take that into account. Sounds like Morris is not a good fit. I hadn't realized that before. Thanks.

You know what the funny thing is? Had you picked Olympic Stadium, most of those guys we have been telling you to drop would have been a great fit.

I guess if I had to pick one, I'd keep Raines. Certainly a better defender, and not weak vs. RHP. I'd want my lefties at Fenway to have speed too, which Tim has in abundance.

Great to see new guys playing '86! It's probably my favorite set by far.

Here's my last Fenway '86 team:

Don't look at the offense, as it was an all stealing team, which is a gimmick that only works if you get everyone you want. But, I had a real effective Fenway staff on that team, so those are the kind of guys you should look for on the pitching side.

Here is a team of mine in 86 Fenway with both Boggs and Raines. It won 103 games so I must have done something right. I probably didn't have enough power and it was a $100M league, but you can get some ideas about what should work in Fenway.

Interesting, you used a very similar formula for offense as I was trying with my draft except I didn't get anybody on my draft list except Boggs or Raines lol. I have poor defense up the middle which I will try to address with waivers but not much is out there below a 3 rating at SS. We have very different philosophies on Pitching as you went with a 5 man rotation it looks like and a strong bullpen.

I am all about pitching and defense in general but my bullpen drafted weak and my defense is awful. I'm curious who I will get out of my waiver claims at 5 pm on Thanksgiving. I must say I will be giving thanks if it turns out the way I hope as I might be able to save this squad.
