Sutter Unconcious...

Look at Sutter's numbers here. In this league, he'll win the MVP, Cy Young , and Fireman's Award. Unfortunatley, NOT on my team...

What a joke

Postby RNMorton » Sat Dec 03, 2011 7:48 am

I'm in that league and will have to face them in the first round of the playoffs. He finished the regular season with 332 IP. Very realistic. Somebody obviously found a gaping hole in the game mechanics. Strato on-line was always pretty good in minimizing unrealistic results, not so on this one. Sent a help message a week ago, no response. I guess nobody cares anymore. Sheesh. :(

It may be unrealistic, but it seems like you are implying that it is unfair or unethical. Why would maximizing Sutter's innings be any different than maximizing Babs Adam's innings, which seems to be pretty common?

I'm not blaming the player at all. The game mechanics shouldn't allow it.

That you're probably right about. I don't know how they fix it, though. Do you think it's different than Bonds hitting 90 HR or something like that?

Completely disagree.

Should the game engine force M. May to be injured after about 126 abs

or Tincup to only pitch about 30 innings

or Mays and many others TO NEVER get injured

or ANY and EVERY hitter AND fielder to NEVER suffer ANY type of fatigue like pitchers do

or EVERY *sp to NEVER miss a start due to injury

or on and on and on...

Really? Take a look at the record books...or almost any league for that matter....I can't see the league in question but my guess is your team might have one or two unrealistic performances as well.

and if Sutter was 3-14 7.85 ERA with 300+ innings and you were facing him in the playoffs you wouldn't post Boo.

Geez Nev take a deep breath

I'm not sure I understand the anger in your posts. Whether I'm facing him in the playoffs really didn't matter to me, it's more of an aside. I probably would have posted this anyway, I really don't live or die by the Strato results I rather enjoy the good natured competition (when it's there).
You're missing my point. Having game mechanics where a reliever can pitch 300+ innings is wrong. It's not a Milt May situation, it's more like figuring a way to draft Grover Alexander and start him every other game. This game should be designed so that the better players put better teams together, not figure out how to maneuver the game mechanics to win. When it gets to that point I'm out of here and you can enjoy Strato without my annoying observations.
If you want to say 300 IP relievers works for you go for it big guy. We agree to disagree.

One thing that seems to be a common misconception about this site is that it is supposed to replicate real baseball. It's not. It's a site dedicated to using a somewhat flawed game engine to compete in a game loosely based on major league baseball.

The game flaws are known, and in time will be corrected. It's very difficult to write an AI algorithm that will take into account all of the many things necessary to manage a Strat-O-Matic team. And this doesn't even mention the need to account for the managerial styles of all of the players active on this site.

Oh, they could write an algorithm akin to a chess engine, that calculated all the possible results of every possible pitcher-batter interaction. But then the game sim would take 10 minutes or more to play a game and the cost would be prohibitive. And programming HAL to suit your personal style would take days, not hours.

As one who played the SOM tournament circuit for a few years back in the day, I am used to the abuse of low-appearance freak show cards. (Shane Spencer, where are you?) Setting the game to strictly enforce appearance limits would fix all of these flaws, but that would lead to other abuses, such as using Sutter for his allotted innings, then releasing him and grabbing Radatz, etc. And it would be far worse with hitters, such as Mize 1950 followed by Gates Brown.

The game is what it is. I've tried the super-reliever route, but don't find it to be a sure-fire winner. Obviously, my opinion is shared by many; I don't see a lot of super-reliever teams.

All I can say is that this game has endured for 50 years now, with some evolution of its original mechanics. The game, although flawed, is easily the most transparent of the various simulations available. The statistical accuracy of its model is very good, but the random number generator can wreak havoc. I would guess that the 2001 Barry Bonds card has hit anywhere from 55 to 120 HR on this site. And I'm sure that the big Bruce Sutter card has had 15 or 20 loss seasons.

I suspect that, if they simply ran each league 100 times, every team would win 1 or more championships. That's the way the game goes. If you focus on the negatives, you won't be here long. If you enjoy the positives, you can find an infinite number of challenges here to keep your interest.
