ATG new cards batch #4 drops Thu., 12/15

Postby bernieh » Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:35 pm

The next batch of monthly new ATG cards will be added to All-Time Greats VI on [b:8118b26e21]Thursday, December 15[/b:8118b26e21]. This and all batches going forward will contain approximately [b:8118b26e21]20[/b:8118b26e21] new cards and will be made available on December 15 to all new leagues, i.e. they won't be added to the free agent pools of existing leagues.

Posting of teasers will begin more in earnest this Thursday, a week before the drop, but I'll post one early bonus later this afternoon, because while the availability of some of these cards I'm trying to work in is still up in the air right now, this one that I've heard some requests for lately is one that I know will be in this batch.

Party on!

Ok here's your early bonus teaser...

Hey everybody!

I have to kick off Teaser Season for this batch with an important preface, to have you fully understand what's going on behind the scenes here.

Strat-O-Matic Co. has entered their big development push leading up to the launch of version 17 of their CD-ROM Baseball game due out in early 2012, so they don't have the time to deliver new cards to us for the online game. They did give us a bigger batch earlier, so I do have a reserve stash, but to be honest, they're getting less and less exciting as I deal out the fun ones to you each month.

Thus I've been trying to be resourceful and improvise, scavenging around in our other sets (most particularly FantaSim) to see what cards I can poach from them. The upside is I'm able to be a bit more nimble, targeting specific requests I've been hearing from you guys, and turning them around more quickly.

The downside is that [i:8118b26e21]FantaSim is an old game[/i:8118b26e21], and the cards I mine from it are not necessarily the most recent cards that Strat-O-Matic has produced. In some cases, SOM has since produced a true Super-Advanced set of cards for the season in question, and in some other cases, they've since updated their process of computer-processing non-SA cards for us. In any case, for example, I know for a fact that the cards below for Arky Vaughan and Nap Lajoie that I've mined from FantaSim are NOT the same as the ones most recently available in the CD-ROM game.

They're STILL Arky Vaughan 1935 and Nap Lajoie 1901, though, and are the ones that have been powering FantaSim for all these years. And they're the only ones that I can present to you at this time. I only hesitate because from what I can tell, this version of Arky Vaughan has significantly more HR power than the one I see in the CD-ROM game. I'm guessing that the majority of you don't mind [i:8118b26e21]that[/i:8118b26e21] much, as long as he's Arky Vaughan. It should be made clear that we've introduced a lot of OTHER cards in ATG that were taken straight from FantaSim. But if there is considerable opinion that I should NOT add these cards at this time, I'll listen.

Anyway, all that said, without further ado:

[i:8118b26e21]Update, Fri. 12/9:[/i:8118b26e21]

Two for today!

I'll try to post these earlier in the day in general. I have some cards in my stash that look like fun, but on the other hand, I'm like, really? You want [i:8118b26e21]him[/i:8118b26e21] to be this good? I'll run a few by you on Monday.

Tony Oliva 1964

Wilbur Wood 1971

4 for today! Happy Monday.

Also, I mentioned on Friday that I was going to run some cards by you today. These players were good players, but the card requested was an outlier that places it in the upper elite of the ATG stratosphere (or at least much higher than their true place in history warrants). ATG has been populated by all sorts of flukes and outlier seasons since its inception, so adding them wouldn't be unusual; I only hesitate because during teaser season, there's so much attention called upon each individual card. And I know that in addition to the "more cards" camp that wants the eye candy, there's the purist camp that would like to see ATG reflect baseball history as authentically as possible. My perpetual job is to balance the two - emotionally leaning towards the latter, but being responsible for pleasing everyone, including the former.

Anyway, without further hedging, here:

- Dutch B. Leonard (1914) - .96 ERA, .89 WHIP
- Claude Hendrix (1914) - 1.69 ERA, .94 WHIP
- Vean Gregg (1911) - 1.80 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

Pick two; you'll see them over the next few days and the remaining one will be saved for January's batch; or if everyone unanimously threatens me with physical violence I'll forget about 'em.

3 for today...

Thanks for the opinions on the pitchers I asked about yesterday. Looks like there's a reasonable consensus that we should try to avoid Federal League players from that era if we can. So here's the 2 other guys:

[img:8118b26e21]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/dutch_b_leonard_1914.gif[/img:8118b26e21]

[img:8118b26e21]http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/images/stratomatic/marketing/atg6/teasers/vean_gregg_1911.gif[/img:8118b26e21]

A couple more tomorrow, which should come close to covering the whole batch, and then the cards debut on Thursday!

Also, soon after this batch is out the door, I'll be posting an official thread where I'll be inviting you guys to go through our other sets like Fantasim, '70s, and '80s, to pick out specific cards you'd like to see in ATG and I'll do my best to get them into subsequent batches. As I explained before, I'm running out of slam dunks in my stash and thus I've arranged to make poaching the older sets easier. Just don't start blurting out requests here, since they'll just get lost in the shuffle. Wait for my official thread!

Bernie would it be possible to "sticky" a thread where the new additions could be kept and listed with a link to the new cards?

I for one haven't been playing all that much lately but would love to be able to see the cards. May prompt me to start playing more.

Thanks for considering it in advance.

If it's a certain shortstop from the 1930s Pirates, I know there'll be some smiling faces around here.

I can only assume you're referring to Tommy Thevenow - I'm still working on him. Cross your fingers!

Edit: Oh, man, do I feel stupid. Obviously you mean Howdy Groskloss. On it.

Laugh all you want, but in 1926 Thevenow -- then with the Cards -- finished fourth in MVP voting with less than stellar offensive stats.
