Those are not inflation adjusted. Maddux today would have signed for more than Lackey. But still, Greg Maddux would never have been fodder for this...

I don't mind the huge contracts for the top stars - it's the mid-level guys getting huge paydays that boggles my mind. Gary Mathews Jr at $50M? Denny Neagle at $52m? Chan Ho for $65M? Jayson Werth at $126freakingM? Those are the contracts that bury teams - teams desperate for success lose out on the top FAs and feel the need to spend that money somewhere. As a Brewer fan, the Jeffrey Hammond 3 yr $21M contract, from back when the Seligs spent nothing on the team, still makes me break out in a cold sweat.

Players should get every penny they can - but damn, management just needs to get smarter.

Jeffrey Hammonds wasn't as bad as either Jeff Suppan (4yr 42 million) or Teddy Higuera (4yr. 13.1 million).

But with small market teams, apparently, if you don't sign free agents you get tons and tons of heat from the fans and press because you are absolutely _going_ to lose stars via free agency. The Brewers might be much better off letting Prince go and doing absolutely nothing than signing a risky long term FA contract to a guy like Rollins, but the fans don't see it that way...

It is only a 4 year contract ,but his first year felt like 5 years.
Adam Dunn "the Big Donkey" ( such an apt nick name). 4 years for for 56 million bucks. Stats last year : 122 games batting avg. .159, ops ,.569, 177 k's, 11 homers, 42 rbi.
Insult to injury , can't keep Buerhle thanks to such well spent money.Every sox fan may now hurl in unison! :cry:

Although must admit, doubtful Buerhle will be worth his new paycheck in 2 years ( even though I love him)!

Going down the list, some deals above that worked pretty well include:

Hunter: Went 23-14 in first Yankee season; Yanks won penants in 76, 77; 78; won WS 77, 78
Reggie: Huge performer for Yanks; 148 OPS+; Mr October
Grich: several big years for CAL; overall OPS+ of 124 plus a good 2B
Baylor: 1979 MVP; overall OPS+ of 118 for CAL
Fingers: 72 saves in first 2 years; 108 Sv overall for SDP
Gossage: 150 saves in 6 NYY seasons; 183 ERA+
Winfield: 135 OPS+ in his full Yankee season; 5 Gold Gloves
Fisk: 12 (that's twelve!) good to excellent years with the White Sox

I'm getting tired of typing, but the only player listed so far who was an actual dud was Wayne Garland. I would say that this list may prove the opposite of the original contention: i.e., that free agents can often be excellent performers and provide good value for money.
