I've never used the team analysis stuff. Bickel was big on that. To me shelling out money to analyze the other teams in the league seems entirely unnecessary and just a waste of money. I just like the ratings for the value component. Having one overall number, to compare players with -- that includes defense -- is useful.

Most times when I make up a team it's done in less than two minutes, without consulting any ratings at all. I create and enter most of my teams when a league gets to 10 or 11 spots filled, so it's generally just a mad dash to fill the league before someone else, like Nev who does the same thing, gets there first. If the league is part of a tourney though or has a lot of tough opponents, I take my time and might spend a half hour making up the team. I spend more time on post waivers maneuvering than anywhere else.

I also make moves at the end of the year once all the remaining games are in your own division. This has often worked spectacularly well, even with the 20% drop penalties.

Doesn't NERP on Diamond Dope take defense into account? Are the Joe the Jet ratings better than that?

On Petrosian's last point, I've been the victim of that. Well, have been the victim of the first tactic too.

Sustained competitiveness is not by accident. I think it's obvious from your understanding of the game that the ratings are not required nor to blame for the success you've had across sets, caps, etc.

JTJ ratings are better at value determination vs salary/eligible pool. Think of it as a way of rating the players' value at each position against their peers--that is, accounting for salary.

NERP does not include defense. However, DeanTSC has a reference that gives the NERP for defensive ratings.

I read that some months ago. I could use a refresher course.

[quote:405af4688c]To get the player’s total value, subtract the fielding rating off this chart from the offensive NERP:[/quote:405af4688c]

Somehow I'd missed this (an important part, don't you think?) and thought that the defense was already incoporated in the DD NERP value. Well...this changes things.

I find it hard to say I have a problem with Joe the Jet or his rankings, part of me would love to see them, but I just love doing my own research.
