Pujols to the Angels

[quote:dacf608d32="PotKettleBlack"][quote:dacf608d32="alvarndc"]There is WAY too much reverence for the almighty dollar nowadays. Lets be candid - no one here could possibly know what to do with $200 million, so what is the differnce between $200 and $235 or even $300 million.

Once you get that high it is an abstraction that has nothing to do with happiness. Being in a home and in a community seems to me to be worth something. Call me crazy.[/quote:dacf608d32]

You are crazy.
With the excess $35 million, I could buy the votes of several more politicians... probably about 15 senators, 35 house members, and 5 governors.

That's just if I want to spend it on political influence.

After I buy my dream house, my dream cars, my folk's dream cars, my brother's dream cars, I would invest down. By that, the extra money becomes angel investment to make things happen. Put people to work. Build stuff in the third world. Whatever. Get an ownership stake in the team after I hang em up (like Elway and Jordan... transcendent icons, right?).

The money at that point is abstract. But abstraction is a fun place to play, as evidenced by the inability of people to leave this game.[/quote:dacf608d32]

I think agabriel was right.

[quote:f1b6534512]many reports suggest that Pujols was offered in the area of 10 years $200 million by the Cardinals. These reports were cited in many other posts on the thread.

One would think Pujols would have let that slip at some time while talking to his wife. I suspect she is in a much better position to know what was offered than writers just making stuff up to have something to report and rile the fans with.

LA is not a community? You can make a home anywhere. So why not make it where it benefits you the most?

Right. Because I have never known a woman with an agenda.

It always puzzles me when people throw up straw man arguments.

I don't think that I ever claimed LA is not a community. In fact my brother lives there and loves it.

But I think it is reasonable to maintain that living in one place for a prolonged engenders more of a sense of home and community than moving about.

If you disagree, fine.

And btw, note in the Boston Herald article that is is well documented that the Cards offered Albert 9 yrs and $198 million LAST January.

SO it really isn't a stretch to think they offered him 10 ys and $200 million this year.

No matter what his wife says. After the fact. When she feels "insulted".

I will agree it is always possible Albert's wife had an agenda. But one should note that she was unhappy with Cardinal's treatment of Pujols. So whatever the truth of the details that would be one more reason to leave. I would keep my wife happy even if it meant making all of St. Louis unhappy with me.

Main thing to me is where someone plays/works should be their cholice. Just because you once worked for one employer does not mean you have an obligation to work for that employer for all of eternity. Albert exercised his right to change jobs. If he got a raise in the process more power to him.

It does not really matter if the Cardinals offered 5 or 10 years guaranteed. It does not matter if they offered 130 or 200 mil. Bottom line is the Angels topped it. They had every right to do so. He had every right to accept. It is the free market system.

Yep. Agreed.

I guess I wish that someone in the public sphere would support the idea that some things are more important than money. Albert could have, but did not, for reasons that in the end are only known to him.

I am struck by the wisdom of agabriels post. We all in some way project our own values onto the discussion.

Great thread.

Playing devil's advocate here...what if Albert was actually looking for a good reason to get out of St Louis, without disparaging the fan base directly?

Maybe he wanted it out, and if he left for the same, or less, money than what the Cards were offering, it would be written that it was a big slap in the face to St Louis...so he decides as long as it's viewed as agreeing to the highest bidder, the fans won't take it personally...?

And no, I don't believe that to be the case, but it's not completely absurd either. Thought I'd throw it out there to add some more food for thought.

One other thing - I don't agree at all with the post saying Albert is downgraded (from mortal to great), because he switched teams half-way through his career. It's not like he pulled a Lebron and bought time for a special on ESPN, just to announce he's leaving. (For the record, Lebron going to Miami to play with his superstar friends didn't bother me, the way he went about it was the unsavory part...to me).

It could be argued he has done that. Reports are the Marlins offered more money. And did you miss the post earlier in this thread talking about all the things he did for charity?

Resigning with St. Louis would have done nothing to show there was something more important than money. It just would have made fans in St. Louis happy. Instead he made LA fans happy.

Anaheim (and OC) is not Los Angeles.
It's real housewives of OC (gated communities) and Disneyland.
That is a community. Not one I would choose, but I'm not much like Pujols.
