Which is probably a reasonable thing to think. Also, Latos only has two years of service time, so CIN has got him for quite a while.

I don't think I include quite this much in the trade as CIN, but it's not [i:15f526b79e]too[/i:15f526b79e] crazy, given the value of Latos and the question marks around the guys they gave up (Volquez's career is in severe crisis, Alonso was somewhat of a disappointment in the minors, Boxberger is a wild reliever, Grandal has a limited track record.)

I think odds are, however, that Alonso and Grandal become quality regulars and maybe the other guys contribute something, which would make the deal favor SD, especially if Joey Votto ends up leaving Cincy anyway (or perhaps even worse, negotiating a Ryan Howard-type contract!) It is also significant what the Padres get for their previous 1B of the future, Anthony Rizzo (or, I suppose, for Alonso). Playing either of them in the OF, especially the Petco OF, would be highly unwise.

Overall, this one will take a few years to sort out.

Much discussion already in San Diego about this; Latos was a polarizing player, lotta upside but inconsistent with lots of grumbling about his attitude. He totally tanked it in the pennant race of 2010 when the chips were down.

We also now have four guys who are supposed to play first base -- Alonso, Rizzo, Kyle Blanks and (my fave) Jesus Guzman. Obviously somebody's going to get traded, and this is the first step of some master plan the new GM Byrnes has, but at least he seems to HAVE a plan. I was disappointed when they let Heath Bell walk, but I can understand not wanting to go beyond 2 years for a 34 year old closer who was getting a lot of PETCO warning track outs last year, and Street should be a solid substitute.

I do think Latos could have been the team's ace and Volquez a roll of the dice. But PETCO has made a lot of borderline pitchers into solid #2 and #3 guys -- remember Aaron Harang last year? -- and maybe it'll give him some confidence back.

Not hating on this trade, just wondering what the he11 we're going to do about first base and whether we can somehow dump Orlando Hudson, who isn't only over the hill, he's a cancer in the clubhouse.

Joey Votto is way better than Howard was at 27. Probably a much better long term risk than either Pujols or Prince. chaaa-ching and bye bye Cincy...

Well, you can't say Byrnes is a wall-flower.

What a shock it was to wake up to this news. At the time only Alonso was known as compensation. I was at the time hoping for one of their two stud catchers, a snazzy young mid-infielder, and a replacement SP that could fill in right away.

I still would have preferred that to what actually came down but several people say it's a good haul for the Padres so maybe it actually is.

I do know we as Padres fans cannot count on Hundley to play well for more than two months of any season. So I'm grateful for Grandal. I also know Boxberger can bring the heat and may be our future Closer after Street resets himself and moves on after 2012. That's if he ever learns about control/command. Love Alonso. No problem at all there. But Volquez? That one is a bit perplexing. Only thing I can say about that is maybe Balsely and Black think they can resurrect Volquez in much the same manner they did Harang and Garland.

That's all I got.

Padre pitching is very tough to gauge. Lots of guys look good pitching in Petco.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if Volquez resurrects himself.
(If he can keep his head on straight)

Even Scott Linebrink posted terrific numbers in Petco. Everywhere else, not so much.

I like Latos a great deal, but we'll see how much of his success was due in part to his home stadium. His splits are below:

2011: ERA at home = 3.24, road = 3.68
2010: ERA at home = 2.59, road = 3.14

Hopefully, Dusty Baker uses him wisely - he's still a young pup.

This trade was basically Latos for Alonso...Edison V. is done...even when healthy he is so inconsistant and no command whatsoever...Alonso was stuck behind Votto...As a huge Reds fan I am excited about the trade and feel Jockerty done us proud...If Bronson rebounds , which I believe he will we are talking a rotation of Cueto, Latos, Arroyo,Leake and either Wood or Bailey. Not bad IMO

No Albert in STL---No Prince in MILW---Braughn in trouble---Latos to Cici===============================================Reds win Central!!
