Padres trade Latos to the Reds for an amazing haul

[quote:a6370c1a61="Pelzer"]This trade was basically Latos for Alonso...Edison V. is done...even when healthy he is so inconsistant and no command whatsoever...Alonso was stuck behind Votto...As a huge Reds fan I am excited about the trade and feel Jockerty done us proud...If Bronson rebounds , which I believe he will we are talking a rotation of Cueto, Latos, Arroyo,Leake and either Wood or Bailey. Not bad IMO

No Albert in STL---No Prince in MILW---Braughn in trouble---Latos to Cici===============================================Reds win Central!![/quote:a6370c1a61]

You've probably read a lot of talk about Latos being immature and all. That might be true to some extent. Another thing that is true is Latos is a guy who thrives under a challenge. He definitely has a chip on his shoulder and tends to march to his own drummer. I have no doubt he will be great for the Reds in 2012.

Couple of points:

- very likely Latos was not only the best current player in the deal, but possibly the best player overall in the deal even 5 yrs from now

- saying this is Alonso for Latos is puzzling, not sure why we should think of it that way at all

- an above avg 1B under 7 yrs of control and an avg or maybe above avg C for 7 yrs of control is pretty good return, if both pan out

- if Latos does turn into a #1 SP, hard to get back full value, but this deal could come close if 3 of the 4 perform at ML level

Three things I like about Grandal right away. Last years hitting numbers (everything looks great), very good caught stealing %, and he is supposedly a leader on the field.

Of course I also read he has some trouble blocking pitches. But maybe that's something you can teach. The cool thing is that the Padres also have defensive wiz-kid Austin Hedges (catcher) in their system so he could always finish up for Grandal when both are playing in San Diego. Better not trade those guys!

Jim Bowdon says Boxberger could eventually be a number three or four SP. Think I might rather have him be an ace Closer.
