feedback on my penalty hit today?

I read that you shouldn't drop players when there is a penalty. I am in the 10% penalty portion of my season which is pretty big. Today Fernando Valenzuela became available and my starting pitching after Roger Clemens has been inconsistent at best. I have also been getting terrible OBP and RISP from Barfield who is driving me crazy. He K's so much, never walks, and basically HR's or makes an unproductive out. His defense is nice. Ron Guidry just didn't seem worth the 2.6 million either and Nolan Ryan can't get out of his own way and cannot pitch on short rest. .

I decided that I would go for it and drop Guidry, Nolan, and Barfield. I took the 10% hit. Guidry and Ryan would have combined for 36 starts the rest of the way. I will get 24 out of Valenzuela. I signed Andujar to be the 5th starter and signed Winfield to play RF which makes up for the defense I lost in Barfield and his batting seems comparable when you include the better clutch hitting and hopefully less K's.

I am hoping if I get in the playoffs that my line-up can scratch out enough runs and perhaps Clemens and Valenzuela can throw some gems. I realize this move might keep me out of the playoffs as well if Andujar is absolutely terrible like he might be. My pitching 3-5 is pretty bad and my bullpen is weak. Somehow I am in first place by 2 games and 4 games ahead of any wild card team outside the division.

Did I screw up? Should I have just stayed with what I had or was it worth it?

Well for much of the season I was being outscored and even as it stands now despite being 40-26 my expected W/L ratio is 34-32. I have had a ridiculous number of lucky victories including 7-0 in extra inning games despite the terrible bullpen.

Clemens lost his first start of the season and since then I have won all 16 of his starts. I am 24-25 when he isn't starting. Obviously Clemens can't maintain that and Ryan didn't seem to fit Fenway Park at all. I know my record isn't sustainable and I have tried to trade but nobody is biting. I know the move is risky but I don't think I would have made the playoffs without better pitching and there isn't any decent relief options available. I also only had 4 more days before the penalty goes to 25% and at that point I would have no options at all.

Valenzuela became available at a time where I felt like Winfield could hopefully (crossing my fingers) replace a decent portion of Barfield's offense.

1. If you're unhappy with a player or 2, try and trade him 1st.
2. If nobody bites on a trade, then a little fine tuning here or there is OK.

Your park is slanted to RH power. Winfield always seems to hit LH's better. As a matter of fact, most of your righty hitters seem to hit LH's better. You really don't have many righty sluggers on your squad.

I actually tried to trade both Ryan and Barfield together as well as separately and couldn't find any reasonable offers other than bad contracts I would then drop. I am .500 against LHP and 14 games over against RHP.

I might have screwed up pretty bad it sounds like but hell this is my first season and you live and learn. I hope to better build my team out of the draft next time. I read that study on the Secret Formula and it tied not making in season moves directly to winning and I've made way too many moves according to that. I am curious how this will play out.

The 90's game is a different beast altogether.

You have to make moves ESPECIALLY if u aren't getting a good season out of a player.

It is rare when making changes with a 40-26 record is a good thing, but it can happen.
