Ejections and Injuries in Strato

Ejections and Injuries in Strato

Postby uvm87 » Wed Dec 21, 2011 8:36 am

My son and I are both into the the on-line game, but we both have a passion for the board game and play a few games most weekends. He has come up with what I think is a clever and simple way to have ejections and season ending injuries. I was wondering if anyone else does this or if the computer version has this capability or if anyone at SOM has thought about this possibility.

For ejections:
If a player gets hit by the pitch you roll the twenty sided die.
- If you roll a 1, the player gets angry and starts yelling at the pitcher.
- Roll 2-20 nothing happens.
If the player gets angry - roll twenty sided die again
- Roll a 1 and the player charges the mound he gets ejected
- Roll a 2 and the pitcher charges the player he gets ejected
- Roll a 3 and they brawl, both getting ejected
- Roll 4-20 cooler heads prevail and no one gets ejected

For injuries:
- Roll 1-19 normal 20 sided rolls apply for length of injury
- Roll 20 player has a fifteen game injury, but could be longer must roll again
- 2nd Roll 1-19 player has 15 game injury
- 2nd Roll 20 player has 40 game injury, but could be longer must roll again
- 3rd Roll 1-19 player has 40 game injury
- 3rd Roll 20 player lost for remainder of season

We've thought of other twists, but mostly for the fun of it. No one has ever been ejected or lost for the season, although someone (Yogi Berra I think) was lost for 40 games. We weren't even playing a full season league , so it didn't matter.

Just curious if anyone else has other interesting twists to the game that they could share.

Many years ago when a friend and I played we had a rule you had to announce a reliever was warming up 1 batter in advance or you could not bring him in.

I dont want to ruin the story, but its a fun read and is totally relevant to your topic

We had a homemade rule that injured players would be available to pinch hit, but if they got on base, they couldnt take extra bases, steal, etc.

In an important end of season extra innings game between the 1950 Red Sox and 1950 Yankees, i pinch hit with the injured billy goodman -- who got on base in extra innings, made it to third -- and i tried a squeeze play that would win the game. the throw resulted in a batter-misses-pitch.... the injured goodman would have to steal home. My dad argued, he's out, he cant try to even throw. I convinced him that anything could have happened ... someone threw the ball away or dropped dead.... so i was allowed one throw on the 20-sided die, if a 1 came up, goodman would be safe. of course i threw it and my dad went nuts with disbelief. so he wrote on our rule sheet for future games, "The Billy Goodman Rule" -- any injured player attempting to steal on a batter misses pitch bunt is automatically out. i think i was 10 when that happened, and i can still remember it and bring it up with my dad.

My friend would always remove a pitcher who hit back-to-back batters with pitches, on the basis that he had been ejected.

I wouldn't do it myself, but I admired his attempt to try to be "realistic" even if it hurt his team...

Thanks for sharing, that was thouightful.

In baseball, the manager often tries to get ejected to protect the
player, hence manager ejections are much more common.

In on-line strat, if this happened, then "Hal" could overrule your
settings for the rest of the game. It would be more realistic,
but it might not be very popular among strat managers. Though it
would be cute.

We thought about having a more likely scenario where the manager gets thrown out (roll 15-20 and manager gets ejected) but couldn't figure out any consequences of the manager getting tossed, especially if we're playing the board game. Can't H&R, can't steal, can't change pitchers, can't move infield in, but none seemed realistic.

We also considered having the two teams brawl and multiple players get tossed, or a player getting suspended for steroid use, but that discussion just resulted in laughing hysterically and coming up with much more absurd situations.
