Advice for this under performing team?

Postby ShakeyBoomer » Tue Dec 27, 2011 9:54 am

Any advice please for this under performing team? I am 21-12 at home and an abysmal 10-23 on the road. Division breakdowns are as follows:

East: Wrigley 66, Petco, Ebbets 57, Ebbets 55

Central: Dodger 64, League Park 34, Griffith 24, Sportsman AL 41

West (my division): Minute Maid, Minute Maid, Cleveland 51, Dodger 78

I am 3rd in the league in runs and 8th in runs allowed. Johnson and Walsh are getting homered to death but there isn't really anything I think I can do about that. I am MUCH better against LH pitching but I am facing a ton of it in this league.

I might have time later to get into better detail, but my first thought is that you've got too much money sitting on your bench. You should have five and only five starting pitchers, and the fifth one should cost you a nickel. I'm guessing that this is a DH league, but I can't figure out where all the guys with starting salaries are fitting into your lineup. There are a lot of things about this game that work in the opposite of the real world of baseball. Having a strong bench is one of those things. Unless you've got a lot of high injury risks, it's just not worth it.

It's a $140 million league and I did not get any of the super-high priced guys in the draft. I had more money to spend than I could shake a stick at.

Looks like this is a non-DH league. So a bench is a little more important than in a DH league. Still Boyer and Alou represent over 8 mil which may be too much. My guess is you are platooning Santo/Boyer. That is 13 mil at one position. Guessing you use Felipe as utlity OFer and insurance against Cuyler going down for 15. Hard to fault you there. Assume you planned to use Bennett and Splittorf as spot starters in lefty leaning parks and Bennett as a lefty specialist.

You are going to give up a lot of HRs no matter who is pitching. Just the nature of strat. Gotta be careful what I say there because blasphemy against strat is strongly responded to here. So just have to live with the lumps your starting rotation is giving up. That leaves your bullpen. Bennett has had 5 save situations. Check your settings and see if you can eliminate that.

Assume you are using Linzy and Garmin as righty specialists. Looks like that is not working, especially Linzy. He has 6 decisions and 3 save opps in only 13 innings. So assumption is every time he gets used game is on the line. You do not want a cheapo reliever having that much influence.

Summary: Linzy's 1-5 record jumps out as well as Walter's 5-10. Walter is probably just bad luck. I would stay the course there. Linzy on the other hand may be a case of getting what you paid for.

agree with Valen on your bullpen. You cannot go that cheap in a 140 mill league IMHO. I would move some of the $$ off of your bench, dump bennett for a .50 SP only 5th SP (so he never pitches), and upgrade your final 2 BP pitchers.

I don't have a problem with platooning Santo (since you had extra cash), but boyer just is not that good. I would prefer the 86 Knight card here. Cheaper also, freeing up more $$ to upgrade your pen.

You have some nice players otherwise, and it is early. Always use caution when dropping and adding players, never go to far! It tends to come back to bite you!
