Slogans

Postby nevdully's » Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:01 am

So you think this slogan or slogans in general can have some type of positive effect, but [b:5ae11c05fa]not ever a negative effect????
[/b:5ae11c05fa]

To these still developing minds and swirling emotions that high school boys and girls are, who knows which seeds grow from the crap we adults plant.

"Just Do It"

Do you think that "slogan" ever became the first or last deciding thought in someone doing "something" that they may not have done otherwise...both good or bad?

How bout "What's done in Vegas stays in Vegas" LMAO I know some who lived by that one.

The behavior you are speaking of will exist whether the slogan exists or not. Scapegoating advertisements or video games makes for good newspaper copy and allows for an individual think they are making a contribution to society when they have done nothing but ban words. It is easy to sit back while setting a lineup and press judgements on a coach I would allow a coach and parents who are spending their time to be with their children in a very demanding activity the freedom to express themselves as long as their actual conduct is proper.

I would just like to emphasize that so many people believe violent crime is increasing in society because of video games when all the statistics say otherwise. Fear is an emotion that can run a life into hiding but I will not change my mind of the right of free expression because of fear-mongering.

I currently coach a boys basketball team of 12 and 13 year olds. Despite having coached off and on for over twenty years and being a respected referee for the last 11 years I had to take a two day course on 'FAIR PLAY' to be eligble to coach at our provincial championships. All coaches at all levels have to take it - no exceptions.

The Fair Play policy deals mainly with teaching these kids not only to be better athletes but to treat people with RESPECT and EQUALITY.

Coaches also are reminded that school sports are simply an extension of the classroom.

I don't believe that the slogan embodies what we should be teaching our youth.

Wow..I wish I was smarter and more patient...That statement above is so full of assumptions and in contradiction with some of your others, I'm not sure I could do any justice in answering it...And I ain't trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited I'm just surprised this is coming from you Charlie

Sure a tee shirt will be very less likely to lead to any negative anything to children with two loving attentive responsible parents and good caring coaches....because the children would know better...not because the tee shirt didn't evoke some kind of emotion, good, bad or indifferent, because if it didn't evoke some type of feeling (which sometimes leads to action) we wouldn't spend billions of dollars on slogans to put on tee shirts...But not every child is so well nurtured and cared for...

If it's a very demanding activity why the broad brush of no athletic ego on these 5 ft.6 120 lb kids.

"Freedom" and "actual conduct is proper" just seem to be in contradiction no? Who's to determine proper conduct in our "free to be" world?

I'm not arguing whether its within our rights, it is...And not suggesting that some law gets passed to outlaw this...I'm hoping against hope that the parents realize its just not needed.

Violence is not all-pervasive in today's society. Ironically enough yesterday both Chicago and New York released their 2011 murder rates and they both are down almost 70% from their peaks of 20 years ago. Here is a link to New York City crime rates:
http://www.disastercenter.com/crime/nycrime.htm The truth of the matter is that as violent video games have gotten more popular violent crimes have receded.
_______________

And I beat my wife less now than 20 years ago....I'm just kidding....I beat her the same...no of course just kidding but really..

Statistics are useful at times and leaves you blind at other times....Murder is down, so whatever whatever......"Murder" is down lmao "MURDER" the fact that its down over the last 20 years is what you want to hang your hat on? Really? BTW I know 20 years ago [b:11be2cc3cf]children Murdered other children for a pair of Nike's that had a certain slogan/symbol that they just had to have.[/b:11be2cc3cf]

Can we teach hate? Only if we don't act on it? If we can, should we?

sportsmanship

Postby 1787 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 6:04 pm

As a long time baseball coach I am not supprised by those parents wearing shirts with slogans that represent the worst part of our nature. On teams that I have coached this would have been unacceptable. Hopefully the atheletes know better and have learned to repect their opponents. I assume those words were meant to motivate and sound fierce. From my perspective they sound silly and rediculous. Yes on the field of play we give 100% and ask our team mates to do the same,we practice and play like a family and we go into "battle" to win but always there should be respect for those we compete against and never should the goal be to harm or embarass the other team. One thing ive learned through the years is that the parents usually take thier cue from the teams coach and shame on him for not being a more postive role model.

The type of behavior the former Marine in this video talks about is more what I am concerned about, not so much Columbine type stuff. I'm not saying that wearing a T shirt with the slogan in question leads to this behavior. But I do think it is emblematic of of a pervasive socialization process in this country that leads to easily seeing other people as enemies to be destroyed, and somehow less human than we are.

This other video focuses more on racism, which really amounts to stigmatizing an out group. But it also gives an eloquent statement about being socialized to be willing to kill.

It is best to try to see and connect with the good in people. You can want to win, without being a jerk. You can compete hard without being mean. Sportsmanship is important, at least to people with character. But we all make mistakes, or become excited in the heat of the moment sometimes. I think the idea for this t-shirt was a mistake.

Petrosian,

Those youtube videos are a stretch from the slogan issue of this thread. However those youtube videos are strong stuff and worth looking at in understanding the issue of war. Thanks for sharing.
