Ironman catchers in live draft leagues -- BAD NEWS!

Hey, if some of the so called vets say "good riddance", fine.

If they are happy to continue what amounts to a circle jerk amongst themselves, I think that is incredibly shortsighted.[/quote:57b1d57cc8]

No one said or implied any of this.

What I did say and imply, is that we need to make informed judgements based on experience instead of conjecture.

BTW-

Its sad to me, that after a few years of trying to get people involved in Live Drafts that something like this is the reason a person wouldnt jump in and give it a shot.

Ok, so if I understand from reading posts in this thread it is ok to have an injury proof Brett or Dimaggio by just swapping out cards.

So what is the real problem with an injury proof Gibson or Mauer? Is it that the cards are so good or that they are catchers?

Would it be wrong if I had an injury proof Piazza. I can you know. I just Draft 97 Piazza and say Bill Plummer (just to satisfy the 2 catcher rule). Then if and when Piazza gets injured I temporarily swap out for the 74 Piazza until the injury period is served and switch back. I have my injury proof Piazza behind the plate and I satisfy the 2 catcher rule. I am sure there must be people out there doing this already. And if not my apologies for "teaching" the trick.

So in reality the only real problem here is that Josh Gibson and Joe Mauer only have one card. Solution: Give them both a second good card. Problem solved. And we say good bye to the hypocricy of complaining about an injury proof Gibson while we take advantage of loopholes to have an injury proof Brett unleashed on a league.

We are mixing issues; Strat Practice and Legality and Im not sure why thats not clearer.

Its great if we all want to discuss if the practice of dropping cards should be okay or not, but its not in the rules.

The 2 catchers on a roster is in the rules.

They're catchers

No, that's OK.

That's right. But if you draft the 0.97 Cliff Johnson instead of Plummer, you're cheating.

Or Bernie fixes the current injury loophole in Live leagues.

Maybe they can make the catcher injury-proof rule an option for the commissioner/league creator to choose. Those who run the live leagues can choose not to make that final catcher on the roster bulletproof, as well as anyone who desires a little more realism. It's not like players untrained at a position have never done so before. In 2007, Pedro Feliz played catcher for the Giants when the starter had been removed, then the backup got hurt. Hasn't played there before or since. I recall Kyle Lohse coming in to play outfield for the Cardinals in a 20+ inning affair. OF is nowhere near as tough (or important) as catcher, but the point is these things can happen. What if your starting catcher gets hurt in the first inning and your backup is in there for 19 innings or more?

I get that we can't be expected to plan for every eventuality...we have no minor leagues etc., so we can't just recall some crappy C for a few games just to cover an injury. But it would make having a third guy as an emergency catcher more valuable. My 2 cents

The card swap issue was never the point of this post. It is completely a red-herring argument. Swapping cards is legal, but of debatable ethics. Two catchers is in the rules. From a more technical side, card swapping can be done in any league. Rigging your team to have only one catcher only happens because of how the live drafts run. The two situations are very different.

And to add one more point, the rosters have been adjusted so that
the rosters now have 2 catchers on them. Anyone know of any
exceptions? Otherwise the non-compliance issue got resolved.

The discusion with regard to considering the existing rules optional,
but then adding new rules to fix other issues is contradictory in
nature. Why even waste one minute discussing a possible rule when
you do not respect the rules that are already in place?new
