Award voting

I enjoy after the season to see which player Hal has decided worthy of the various awards. Its curious how the determination is made and following a current 80m season that I just completed I am amazed at one of the results.

The Cy Young voting went to


Pedro Martinez 18 - 10 2.68
Pedro did lead the league in Ks but was not even in the top 10 in wins.

Redding 25 - 4 2.74

1st in wins, 1st in winning pct. and 2nd in ERA

my team wins the Division with 88 wins on the last night of the season,this guy should not only been Cy Young winner but The MVP [not even a one vote in that award cat.]

does any one else have any stories like this or am I the only idiot who actually looks at those things.

I have a recently completed team. McGwire finished 3rd and F. Robinson finished 4th in MVP voting. Foxx had better stats in every category except HR, and he didn't make the list.
They made a monster trio. All 3 had over 160 RBI

No doubt about it. Bob Lemon recently led the league with 27 wins, two more than his nearest competitor, and finished 4th in the Cy Young race:

Also, Steve Blass with 25 wins was the league's only 20 game winner and didn't even get mentioned in the voting:

While I like for my players to get individual awards, like the real life professional athletes all say, the awards are nice, but I'd rather just get a ring.

I am on the team that had Pedro. Not that I know how the formula is calculated either, but a few other things to consider:

Redding was 7th in league in run support, which certainly helps him accumulate wins and maintain a higher winning percentage. No clue what Pedro's run support was since he wasn't a league leader.

Besides leading in ERA, Pedro led the league in WHIP at 0.95. Bob Gibson was a distant second at 1.12, and Redding was 7th at 1.21.

Look at the All Star selection process today in MLB. Fans vote, players vote, managers choose also.

For MVP and Cy Young and the All Star Team too, if the site rebuild ever gets accomplished, first change the Al Gore Rhythm that is biased against small ball hitters getting the MVP. Tweak the pitching as well, with heavier weighting of winning pct, total wins and ERA more than K's. Then let the managers vote. Weight each equally and choose the awards that way.

Give each manager 3 votes for MVP on a 5-3-1 basis. Each manager can choose only 1 player on their team to vote for, but only if that team makes the playoffs. Managers who don't make the playoffs can't vote for their own players at all. That way if Bonds hits 110 hrs for a team in Fulton 78 that wins 65 games, he might not be a lock for the MVP.

Here's an example of how broken things currently are. This team is currently doing rather well in the Barnstormers Semi-Final Round. Lajoie is 3d in the league in BA and 2nd in the league in RBI's. Delahanty leads the league in hitting, runs scored and triples. Neither is listed on the MVP voting despite being key players on a team with over an .800 winning pct. Also Murray has 3x as many votes as the runner up for Cy Young but no MVP votes. C'mon. :roll:

Might be fun to have a Mendoza type award; player who least performs to expectations. I'd vote for Higbe. Then maybe Vaughan. :x
