Anyone play WhatIfSports? How does it compare to SOM online? I am thinking of trying a league, but would like to get some feedback from anyone who has tried it previously.
I have played Baseball Mogul over the years. I think it's might be a more complete game than SOM. The BM game has every player for every team for the last 100+ years. Plus there is more control over your team.
I downloaded the new 2012 version this morning from Sports Mogul website for $20. They threw in the 2012 Football Mogul simulation game for free (download only).

I play the Hardball Dynasty. I really like it. It is similar to being a real GM. You control every little aspect. The one thing I don't like is that you have ratings that you try to translate into how each player will do. In strat, you already know each players potential according to their card. WIS is somewhat blackbox. You can't get the total GM experience from strat though.

There is a link on that web page to download a free demo version, it will also give you some details on the game. The game itself is on sale for $20 (one time charge). The game itself has been around for around 14-15years. I bought the 2012 version today & got a free complementary Football Mogul sim game (no additional charge).
There are multiple player databases you can choose from from 1900-2011. You can play a particular year with a particular team (it is sort of a dynasty mode. the stats and ratings will accumulate from year to year.) You can create a customized league if you wish.
The stadiums available are for the current teams for 2011. However, you can import stadiums or create new ones before or during a season.
You can choose to use the historical player database or have the sim create fictional players (or use a combination of both.) You can also create your own players & assign the players rating if you wish.
You can set line-ups, rotations. move players from/to minor leagues. You will have to negotiate player contracts or go to arbitration at year-end. In previous years the AI was not that great. It has gotten somewhat better.
There is also an amateur draft. so if you start playing say in the 1960's, you will have an opportunity to draft future HOF players when they are rookies. The 60's was used as an example - it can be any year.
There is also an option to go to player mode. You can set the game to stop at a critical point in a game and play the game yourself. You can sim by day, week, month or season. However, the sim will stop if say you are tied 2-2 in the 8th or 9th inning. You have the choice to play or just let it resume simming. (You can play the entire game also if you choose.)
There is a Financial aspect to the game as well. you have to make sure your team is profitable, otherwise you won't be able to sign players from year to year. There is no set salary per player. Salary is negotiated based on how the player has performed in previous seasons.
There are online Baseball Mogul leagues, though I have never tried those.
I don't think there is anything SOM does, that baseball Mogul does not do. There are 3 or 4 levels of I guess "difficulty" when you first set up a league.
I have been playing SOM for the last 5+ years and really enjoy playing on here. However, I when I find I need to cut back on costs, I inevitably go back to Baseball Mogul.
If you are interested download the free demo. For a one-time $20, charge getting both a baseball & football sim is a pretty good value in my book.
It's a fraction of what Strat charges. Wheter the game is better or worse is just a matter of opinion.

As I see it, Mogul primarily simulates being an owner. As stated, you will have to deal with ticket and concession prices, TV contracts, stadiums, etc. The emphasis is on running a franchise over a period of years -- making decisions about contracts, free agents, drafts, etc., and making sure that the operation is financially profitable.
Board game SOM primarily simulates being an in-game manager. The emphasis is on how well you can make lineups, bring in relievers, and otherwise manage strategically (ideally, doing so with actual rosters from a given MLB season.)
TSN SOM primarily simulates being a general manager, with the caveat that you only need to worry about one season. For that season, you draft a roster, make waiver moves and trades, and essentially "hire" a manager. You can tell that manager what lineups to use and how you want the team to be managed generally, but, like a real GM, you can't determine every in-game move.
