Error on dice roll 3-6?

Postby daddybrucem » Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:44 pm

Can someone explain how an error can be made off the batter's card? The batter was Jim Landis. His 3-6 vs. LH is a Single* 1-19 Lineout 20-20. I grew up playing SOM and if my memory serves me correctly, errors can only be made on GBX and FBX, and only off the pitcher's card. Perhaps this was an outfielder throwing error, however, if I recall, extra bases can only be attempted on hits followed by no asterisk, and it was always a 1-20 chance. My left fielder, Joe Evans, is LF(+1)e7 (see below for details). Please advise. Thanks,

*** TOP OF INNING 1 ***
0 T.Henrich 5-7 Single (RF) b-1 F9
0 1 M.Gazella 4-8 Single (RF) 1-2 b-1 F9
0 12 W.Stargell 1-10 Single (CF) 2-3 1-2 b-1 bpSI 1-9 F9
0 123 J.Landis 3-6 Single & Error - LF 3-H 2-H 1-3 b-2 F9
0 23 G.Nettles 4-10 Fly Out (RF) b-0 bpSI 1-9 F9
1 23 F.White 4-7 Line Out (3B) b-0 F9
2 23 B.Nicholson 3-5 Single (RF) 3-H 2-H b-1 F9
2 1 A.Ashby 4-5 Fly Out (CF) b-0 F9

The hint is that it's a Single & Error.
Bad throw to home to get the runner who started at second base.

It was clearly a throwing error, but doesn't the play end with a "Single all runners advance 1 base"? The offense did not initiate taking an extra base because the asterisk prevents an extra base attempt. Did the rules change, and what chart kicks in to reflect a throwing error?

If you look at the rules that are in effect, you will see that some hits with an asterisk are not an automatic advance.

Thanks for the response. I see now that fielding and throwing is a huge factor, way beyond the X chance. Despite the 5% charge, does it make sense to change, at this time, to: LF, CF, RF 1's (-3,-4,-5), with fielding of 1 or 2 at all other positions?

If you are going to start changing your whole team aroind every time you allow an unearned run, you are in for a painful experience with this game. If you thought Joe was the best long-term choice for your team in LF, why change? Even if you have a really good team, you are going to lose 60 games and allow 75 unearned runs. It's a long season.

I made no changes and my team is in 1st place. After 126 games, Evans has 30 Triples. I believe he has about 5 outfield errors. Thanks for the input. Bruce
