Fielder 9 years?

Postby visick » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:07 pm

Valen I know this.

I use to catch. As well as pitch.

There are LOTS of guys who call a "good" game. Calling a good game is a little misleading though. Lots of catchers look over to the dugout nowadays to see what the pitching coach wants...

But this is worth that much? Makes me throw up a little...

Brewers fan here--season ticket holder since about 86. Hate to see Prince go, he really was the heart and face of the organization. He will be missed and I hope he does well as a Tiger. He will be a HUGE plus in the clubhouse as well as on the field. Super fun player to watch, never gets cheated out there! Wants to play 162 games every year, and usually does. Takes his walks well, and if you make a mistake, it's gone. I usually hate the term "clutch", but he deserves his reputation as a clutch hitter.

All that being said, I'm glad we didn't sign him for 9 years. I just can't see it as a good investment for either team. The Brewers will probably give Matt Gamel a full time shot full time at 1st. We'll see in 5 or so years if Detroit made a good decision.

Frankly, I think Boras got really lucky that VMart got injured. It wasn't looking likely that anyone else was even coming close to 9 years.

Would have been interesting to see what someone would pay him for one year, then let him hit the market again next year. That would have made a lot more sense for the Tigers.

Fielder in Detroit does not make a great deal of sense. Too much like Cabrera. Both are great hitters but they cannot both play first base. And neither is going to do you any favors playing somewhere else. If Fielder is used as DH that is a lot of money for only contributing at the plate. My bias against DHs probably shows here. Just don't believe anyone can earn 20 mil as a DH.

Best thing about the Detroit signing though is now the local media in Dallas will quit calling for his signing and any temptation Rangers might have had is gone.

If he put up Ted Williams 1941 season or Bonds 2001, that would be ~20M worth of value in the current climate.

Speaking impartially;

A lot of years for a player with his body type, the Tigers may regret this half way through that contract.

Speaking as a White Sox fan ;

Maybe he'll come down withAdam Dunn's disease.

I didn't think anyone noticed. I certainly didn't.
