Clearly a bad move by the Tigers. Maybe this will even the playing field between them and the Yankees :P

ANY 9 year deal has a great deal of potential to be somewhere between bad and crippling to a team in years 5-9.

[quote:301cd31c9d]There are LOTS of guys who call a "good" game. Calling a good game is a little misleading though. Lots of catchers look over to the dugout nowadays to see what the pitching coach wants... [/quote:301cd31c9d]
I definitely defer to your knowledge as a catcher. You make a good point about the catchers who look over to the dugout for help.

But 2 points if I may. First is whether that looking over is dictated by the manager or because the catcher is unsure what to call. I see this as similar to a QB calling plays verses having them signaled in. Most would rather do it themselves but if you want to remain the starter better do as coach says.

Second and most important is have you seen Martin doing this? That is all that matters when discussing what Martin is worth. I do not pay attention to that so have no idea. So will be taking your word on that.

Biggest factor though regardless of any of this is Martin was arbitration eligible. So question yankees had to deal with is how much he might be awarded if it went that far and is the created acrimony worth whatever they might save by letting it go that far. Whatever our opinion of Martin is the arbitration panel is likely looking at the fact he was an allstar which means they likely base their decision on what other allstar catchers are getting. That system drives up salaries but it is what the owners agreed to in exchange for keeping salaries low early in a player's career.

One point to remember for whatever it is worth is the 12 mil Vmart makes is may be covered by an insurance policy which will now kick in since he will miss entire season. That takes some of the sting out of the budget.

Question: Are the Tigers a better team with Fielder in lineup instead of Vmart? If so is the improvement sufficient to make the difference in Detroit losing in LCS and Detroit winning that and the world series? If that turns out to be the case does that change anyone's mind on this deal?

Fielder is about a wash with V-Mart. Maybe 2 wins to the good side.

I do not know that that change makes them better this year.

Next year, they get better offensively, but have that jam I detailed earlier.

They don't have Martinez this year. Adding Fielder makes them better than than would be without him.

[quote:21ae19bb1b="Valen"]With Martin you have to look beyond the BA. He did supply some pop with 18 HRs and 65 RBI. But many believe the real value in a catcher is how well he calls a game and gets the most from pitchers. Catcher is a position where defense is not always recognized but is extrememly important.[/quote:21ae19bb1b]

Then just sign Jeff Mathis

God 3 years of that black hole on the Angels, replaced by another blackhole that can draw walks.... :x :?

But Fielder in that park isn't going to be to good in 5 years, let alone in the the years after that.

Original comment by me said the deal is insanity for 2013-15. I think they will be about a wash this year.
