Fielder 9 years?

PKB, it is not a wash. You can't compare Tigers with Fielder vs Tigers with Martinez. Tigers with Martinez is not an option in 2012. You must compare Tigers with Fielder vs Tigers without Fielder or Martinez. That is not a wash. Its a big positive.

If I did not know better I might think you are an Angel fan unhappy with the catching situation.

Wasn't Conger supposed to be a plus hitting prospect at one time?

How happy Detroit is long term with Fielder may depend some on just how much that park takes away from his power numbers. Checked and Martinez only had 12 HRs. Got a lot of mileage out of those with 103 RBI. But if Fielder puts up 40 and 140. I don't think after Martinez went down Detroit's chances of making playoffs was very high. With Fielder taking his place I would expect them to be favorites to repeat as division winners.

on the plus side (in a sad way) Fielder is great insurance if Miggy drinks himself out of the league.

Uhm. I can (and will) compare whatever I want to.
Like say, Tigers at the beginning of the playoffs last year to Tigers at the open of Spring Training this year. Which is what I'm comparing. The cast is essentially the same except that VMart is not going to play, and Prince is subbed for him. That is NOT a major upgrade.

Now, you can compare the Tigers at the beginning of the week to the Tigers at the end of the week and say it is not a wash or even close. That is what you are saying, in essence. But that is lemons to apples. I don't say that your comp is invalid. It's just that I don't think this move vaults them any higher than they were last year.

And really, I expect Fister to revert to the pitcher he was prior to Detroit rather than being the guy he was post trade 2011. So, really, between then (when they beat the Yankees but were outscored in the playoff series, and lost to the Rangers) and now, I think they are about the same. Fister 2-3 wins worse, Fielder 2-3 wins better than VMart. Defense, really bad if the plan is to get rid of Inge and put Miggy at third.

I do not think the goal of this was to repeat as division champs. It was to take the next step. If they repeat what happened last year... then it's a wash and disappointing.

I could be wrong, but I think they count total wins, not total runs

Naw, any year they knock the Yankees out is a success

Run differential is an indicator of future success.

Any year you know the Yankees out with payroll under 120M it's a success. When you're over $120, you're playing the Yankees game. $104M before the Prince was Right.
(and A-Jax, Fister, Boesch, Avila, Pauley, Schlereth, Villreal, Albuquerque, and so on).
Sorry, but you are what you hate.

Can you translate this into English for me, please?

Seriously, are you saying the Tigers payroll shouldn't rise about $105M? Why? The Yankees need at least a $95M advantage, $80M is not enough?

Mike Illitch is 82 years old. He's worth about $2,000,000,000 and he's built dynasties in two other professional sports. I appreciate that he's willing to spend $200M to give the good people of Detroit a viable team in 2012. Tiger fans figure we'll worry about what happens in 2013 and beyond during the next off season.

I'm saying you can't spend what the Red Sox spend and hold the moral high ground at the same time.

"moral high ground" ?!?

You're talking about the city that made heroes out of Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Bob Probert, and Ndamukong Suh :D

[quote:a55b2fe70b="Valen"]Fielder in Detroit does not make a great deal of sense. Too much like Cabrera. Both are great hitters but they cannot both play first base. And neither is going to do you any favors playing somewhere else. If Fielder is used as DH that is a lot of money for only contributing at the plate. My bias against DHs probably shows here. Just don't believe anyone can earn 20 mil as a DH.

Best thing about the Detroit signing though is now the local media in Dallas will quit calling for his signing and any temptation Rangers might have had is gone.[/quote:a55b2fe70b]

As a Cubs fan it is nice to see him and Pujols gone, but shouldn't a lineup with the two of them be extremely dangerous L/R combo and therefore add value overall? As weak as the Detroit division now is they surely are a big favorite to get to the playoffs. With Verlander and the bats anything would be possible, you could then easily DH one at home and play Inge at 3B with Verlander on the mound.

As long as Fielder is not Dunn in, I think this is a positive for Detroit.
