ATG new cards batch #5 debuts 1/30/12

Postby Stormcrow2012 » Thu Jan 26, 2012 12:16 pm

Pot,
All I can say is that in my many CD-ROM games mostly with a wide variety of catchers arms Hal (or the computer manager) seems much too conservative for me on the base paths. My current league is a draft league with the Hall of Fame cards and the Heroes set (basically similar to ATG, but with a lot less players, which is part of the reason why I like playing here at TSN. The sheer number of players that is...) and when the computer manager is set to "Conservative" for base running and stealing it is much too conservative for my liking. I have seen the computer manager not steal when there is an 80% chance of success, and I don't mean with the team's best power hitter up and two outs either. I can not say setting your base running to "Aggressive" means you will win more games every time because I have never conducted a study. But I have seen the computer manager (Hal) manage much too conservatively on the base paths.

I do remember seeing a study of outfielders' arms that concluded that they are way overrated. And this study was conducted with thousands (if not tens of thousands) of games. I think it was posted at the Strat-O-Matic Fan Forum.

How fast are the new cards approaching? This is very exciting to see new players added each month to what is already an incredible list of cards. So I would like to thank Bernie for such gifts. But when are we going to get a better Buddy Bell card? How about 1980,....for Bell? I would also like to see the 2000 Travis Fryman card.

Thanks Stormcrow. The reason I ask is that stolen bases, aggregate, don't win a ton of baseball games. In a normal scoring environment, it's too small to turn a lot of games. In a depressed scoring environment (like the late 70's, early 80's), base stealers can accumulate enough steals to move the win needle. But in a large scoring environment (the steroid era, ATG100+) way too small.

But I'd be curious to see some data from either the CD ROM game on SB attempts and winnings or SB attempts * Success and winning.

If I am understanding stormcrow correctly it does not matter if the league was full of ATG like -3 to -5 arms or 90s like 0 arms. It appears he is saying that after all the arm adjustments were made the success rate would be 80% but runner still was not sent. I can definitely say when I was playing the board game if I had an 80% or better chance of safe that guy was going.

Teasers Part the Eighth

Postby bernieh » Thu Jan 26, 2012 4:13 pm

Word from Bbrool is that he's finished with the hitters, and he [i:02d071ff65]thinks[/i:02d071ff65] he should be able to have pitchers submitted by Friday, or the weekend. In any case, I'll still make the batch available the very next business day, so [i:02d071ff65]hopefully[/i:02d071ff65] we're looking at Monday. Fingers crossed, but no promises!

Another pair of teasers for you, the last of this week. Thanks to River Field View for making me realize that there's nothing really mandating that each batch of 20 cards needs to be evenly split between hitters and pitchers!

In honor of his recent retirement, this fine player will be making his ATG debut! Discuss his Hall of Fame qualifications here.

1987 was the first year I played Strat seriously (i.e. not just as an 8-year-old tagging along with my older brother), so this card, high up on the community poach request list, brings back memories:

(For those who can't see the card images for some reason, they're supposed to be: Jorge Posada 2000, George Bell 1987)[/size:02d071ff65]

I like the additions and totally agree that splitting evenly between hitters and pitchers is not important. For my taste you can just add all hitters!

Posada had 505 AB + 107 BB in 2000. He's not bullet-proof, but he wears Kevlar.

Valen, that is exactly what I am saying. If you have ever played the CD-ROM and managed the actual game they give you the percentages for all the base stealing and base running decisions. And I agree with you Valen, if it is an 80% chance the runner will be safe on a steal of 2nd base, I want him running, unless I am down by a lot of runs and it is the 9th inning.

Dear Bernie,
You do a hell of a job and I love this game here at TSN the way you have set it up. 4000 (and growing) players to choose from is incredible!! But can we get a better Buddy Bell card (1980) one of these months? Keep up the great work!
