I'm a big fan of the steal round-- was in a keeper league with a similar format a few years ago (can't recall if you were in it or not), and I thought it worked well.

I'm fine with a reduced player pool at the start, and the card years is an interesting twist. How would the Negro Leaguers be handled?

I suggest alternating between DH and non-DH seasons-- might make for some interesting strategic decisions re: defensively challenged sluggers. Another possibility is a maximum dollar amount that can be kept each season.

$100M is fine with me. If need be, I'd rather go lower than higher (and especially if we used a restricted pool).

Another suggestion to mix things up in future years: require teams to change parks each season, and to prevent teams from using a nearly identical park, require that each of the park factors change by 3 (in either direction) from year-to-year. Just a few thoughts...

Otherwise, the first season of the league is limited to 4 seasons of cards, 1900, 2000, 1901, and 2001. I suspect you can't field 12 teams with that restriction.

Yes, I believe 0 or 1. So 1900, 1901, 1910, 1911, 1920, etc.

I like the steal round, 100m with alternating DH/non-DH, and changing parks each season. If we're going to deepen the player with each round, I'd rather go by era than year. I just think it would be less confusing, easier to search for players, and perhaps vary the style of play from round to round.

The Negro League players could be their own era or could be added with the pre-WWII guys.

player pool

recently played in a league that used only players with cards from what has been termed the "Golden age of Baseball" [1921-1960] Negro league players were allowed although I suggest they be limited to [3] per team. I like 80 or 100m caps but No DH would reflect the years being played better. Following season #1 each team could then sign free agents from years outside the peramiters limied to [2] per team. A team would be required to protect 12 players from one season to the next.

Sorry I've been away from the thread for so long.

Thanks for the ideas 1787. Why did they pick 1921-1960?

Personally, I think I like the idea of using the already existing DB, pre, post, and exp sets because it would make it easier to search. The NeL players could be their own set or added to one of the other sets.

I like the idea of alternating DH/no DH. That way everyone gets to play their preference.

I like the steal a player round

I think protecting 12 players would be too many. That's close to the whole team of starters. I think protecting 7-9 players would be a better range.

I like the idea of changing parks every season with the new park being atnleast 3 ratings away from the previous park at all four ratings. Or maybe the new park has to be a total of 15 rating points different than the previous park.

I prefer player by some function of years (decades, last digits,...) - very easy to filter the downloaded player set browser in Excel.

DH / no DH - OK with anything

# of keepers - depends on how restrictive the player pool. The idea of [b:c5875b32af]requiring[/b:c5875b32af] 12 keepers is fine with a smaller pool (will have to retain some lesser players). If we have a large pool, I prefer a lower cap to keepers.

Steal round good. Like process "set some keepers, steal, set rest of keepers"

I dont understand the need for stadium changing, but am OK with whatever. Stadium change can help as much as hurt someone. My thought is that your stadium is your stadium. Changing it should require some kind of investment (ie forfeit one of your early draft picks)

So, we could field teams in the 1st season.

My big question is when players become ineligible. Say we choose this last digit method. For our seasons, the pool becomes:

Season 1 - 0
Season 2 - 0,1
Season 3 - 0,1,2
Season 4 - ?? 0,1,2,3 or 1,2,3

I think at some point players should drop from all eligibility, not sure when (i'd say yr 4 or 5). If the league goes on long enough, our pool groupings just loop.

L is the NeL players and I'd say slot them as their own pool wherever needed to balance the overall - probably between 5-6 in this method

OK, first let me say that I'm cool with whatever we decide to do.

WHat I had mentioned to michael was something I have been kicking around to try once one of my other theme leagues completes, but I hadnt put it together in my mind totally.

-First Season Draft of players who have a card that ends in 0 or 1.
-Play the Season
-keep a certain number of players on different "contracts": 3 season, 2 season, 5 season,longer, shorter, total number and lengths up to league managers to decide before starting league
-have a new player draft of NEW players whose cards end in 2
-allow a Free Agent draft, maybe 2 rounds of unused eligible players (0, 1, 2)
-PLay Season 2
-repeat, with a new player draft of "3" players, Free Agent draft, contracts
-and so on............

Things to be determined:
-How many seasons are the 0 and 1 cards eligible for? (and 2, 3, 4, etc as well)
-Ballparks: might be cool to have each manager pick a city or franchise and give managers the option of using any, say Forbes Field in a given season

Like I said, somethign I've been thinking about trying, and when I saw the Keeper League, thought I would mention it. May not be a good idea right now

I like that idea JJ. I can see how it would be easy to sort using excel. Ill have to download it.

A couple thoughts. There would clearly be enough players in season 1, but will there be enough salary for 12 teams to field 100mil cap? Will there be enough 500k players to field backups? If not, we should start with 2 numbers instead of one.

I think there should be a limit to between 3-5 out of the 11 player pools you have listed. Another thought would be, instead of going in order (1,2,3 then 2,3,4 then 3,4,5) would could run a ramdomizer before each season to pick the player pools used so we could end up with any combination.

As far as the parks go, I could see it either way and I'm ok with it either way. It might be fun to have to play different parks every year. On the other hand, the purpose of a keeper league is to have some continuity from season to season so it makes sense to extend that to the parks as well.

I do think we should have a round for parks as part of the draft so we don't end up with 4 Dunns, 3 Hiltops, and 5 Forbes.
