Pitcher substitution issue?

Pitcher substitution issue?

Postby freetexas » Tue Feb 07, 2012 7:39 am

I had an odd thing happen in a game last night. My relief pitcher was injured on a 6-12 roll, and a new pitcher was selected by "Hal." He did not face a batter, and the CM selected another pitcher. Since pitchers have to face at least one batter after coming in to the game, this violates baseball rules. It also burned a pitcher I eventually needed in the game.

*** TOP OF INNING 6 ***
SUBSTITUTE P - Babe Adams

1 F.Thomas 6-12 Pop Out (1B) b-0 F9

B. Adams Injured for 3 more games

2 W.Clark 2-6 Single (RF) b-1 F9

A substitute pitcher certainly does NOT have to pitch to the entirety of one full batter.

Can you see if Geyer in your specific example threw at least one pitch? Or did he get injured while warming up? Not sure how SOM would account for these instances (rare plays?), but I've seen pitchers leave before throwing a single "game" pitch.

Rule 3.05(b):[quote:b8251fe0e6]If the pitcher is replaced, the substitute pitcher shall pitch to the batter then at bat, or any substitute batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until the offensive team is put out, unless the substitute pitcher sustains injury or illness which, in the umpire-in-chief’s judgment, incapacitates him for further play as a pitcher.[/quote:b8251fe0e6]So, either the reliever himself got hurt, or the programming is mistaken. Either possibility seems plausible...

I checked, and Geyer did not throw a pitch.

Old Guys IP H R ER BB SO HR PC ERA
J.Tannehill 4 11 6 6 2 1 0 88 3.89
G.Morton 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 17 0.00
B.Adams 0 2/3 0 0 0 0 0 0 7 2.21
R.Geyer 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5.40
D.Danforth 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 3 0.00
A.Fromme LOSS(0-2) 3 1/3 3 1 1 1 1 0 43 3.86
Totals 9 16 7 7 3 3 0

Nor was he injured. It looks like Geyer was announced, did not pitch, and then Danforth was announced and came in to pitch.
