Is this team really this bad?

You could also try trading Maddux for two good players. It would be an improvement overall.

Starting Help

Postby 216 Stitches » Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:29 pm

On SP in $200 mill, you don't always need upgrades, sometimes
you need alternatives (spot starters). Maddux can and shoud go
every 4 days, but if you can keep up with choosing SP for every
game, having a couple of right hand and left handers for the teams
that lean one way can get you the best possible matchups. If you look
at the roster chart of the entire league, many of the teams will have
more than 4 SPs, and they will be using them. It will generally be a
mix of RHP and LHP, usually no more from one side. So if you added
a right handed SP, you could get McNally the best possible matchups
by not using him against teams that kill lefties. You have to have time
to scout the team, you can look at the standings (W-L vrs. righties, lefties), splits on the other team (like I did your team) and, of course,
stadium being played in.

Spot starters won't save a season, but it can keep you competitive
in more games. My guess, is that a team using spot starters or a
variation might get a 5 win advantage over the course of a season,
4 man rotations can and do make the playoffs in the high cap leagues,
but in a close race, spot starting helps somewhat.

Platoon Help

Postby 216 Stitches » Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:29 pm

As for platoons... well the best platoons are probably taken. For future
leagues, look at who is being used as platoons on the other teams.
You don't have to reinvent the wheel on every choice.

For this team, you can look at which positions are doing especially poor
against lefties and search on the "Balance L" to see who might work.

DH should be easy to find tons of guys. Frog Redeus is often available
as a lefty killing DH. In the OF, guys like Wild Bill Wright, Neil Robinson,
Cleon Jones, maybe Baby Doll Jacobson. Babe Doll will probably be
available, the rest, probably not, but maybe. There might be even
better one available.

In the infield, players like HR Johnson, Bill Monroe, Scott Brosius, Joe
Cronin. At 1B buys like Hodges, Killebrew, Galaraga.

Two really good lefty killers go a long way to keeping the opponents
honest, and under many circumstances, they platoon-mates will
mitigate the need for additional backups at those positions. You might
need more, because the really good ones are gone by now.

Not enough power to out hit the opponent in your own park. Plus with weak pitching this team will be below .500 for the year. 200mil leagues really bring out any flaws in a team.

The moral of the story: Next time, don't get in a $200 mill league. They suck @$$ if you don't get the players you wanted in the draft. 95% of the time you can't improve your team with the FA leftovers... and I don't want to hear about the platooning BS w/cheaper guys. The $200 mill leagues consist of the 'haves' and 'have-nots'.

Disagree you cannot recover from a bad draft at 200 mil. Might have been true at one time but player pool is so deep now no reason you should not be able to be competitive.

And in most leagues if you can be competitive you have a shot because the difference between a good team and not so good is a fine line. Factor in that in most leagues you have opponents the quality of Nev and Salty and bad drafts are not the primary reason for struggling. There are a lot of people out there who know what they are doing and most leagues will be filled up with them.

I think the biggest challenge of the 200 mil leagues is not the draft but realizing the difference between a team full of stars and one that fits together. It can be easy to look at your roster and think pretty good team when in fact you are outclassed at every position because there are so many great players. That means little things can make the difference between a 90 win team and a 90 loss team.

We'll agree to disagree. When you're ranked 12th in the waiver process and there are no players left you have no chance. I had a $200 mill team w/1 $10 mill pitcher and just 3 position players above $9 mill, and that was not by design.

Top FA position player available was Roger Connor's $8.55 card. Top FA pitcher was The Bird @ $8.66. Other teams had as many as 7 position players above $9 mill. More talent = more wins. Less talent = more losses.

I'm no expert; don't claim to be. But I've played in 2 $200 Mill leagues and have been screwed both times in the draft. Overall (including the 2 $200 mill leagues) I have a .511 winning percentage and have won 5 titles in 37 teams, at least 1 in $140, $100, $80 mill leagues. In every one of those teams I was able to tweak my roster after the draft through waivers, both before and after the season began.

My win % in $200 mill leagues: .459...

The winners and losers are determined at the draft. The question is, do I know what the hell I'm doing when compiling my draft order in a $200 mill league?? Apparently not, but I'm not wasting my money on them anymore.

many reasons why i don't think 200M autodraft is fun, this is one of em. i agree it's all about the luck of the draft. I think there can be improvement with carefully constructed platoons, but it takes attention during the season.

Sorry, but I agree this is just not a 200M roster overall for the park. Are not outhitting your opponents at home.

As someone said, a guy like Cano or Vizquel for instance are overpriced here...

I think you need to go platoon everywhere except foxx williams griff. Guys like cuyler don't belong on a wrigley team. Neither do mcnally martinez mclain. All the Ms except Maddux :)

Ah, never answered the question:
Yes.

But use the remaining time to experiment with platoons and spot starters.
