Third base Tubby

AWESOME VALUE PICK, MUST USE!

Postby dspeters5 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 8:30 am

I use Tubby very frequently at thirdbase, never secondbase. He can be a nice leadoff man. Has speed, good OBP. Joe Torre is a 3e27, so whats a few more errors. I have been seeing Pedro Guerrero and Harmon Killebrew and Dick Allen at thirdbase in many leagues. Their defense is worse than Tubby's. There is a derth of options at thirdbase, but Tubby can fit in,if you pass on George Brett or Mike Schmidt, or Foxxie. Miguel Cabrera, Edgar Martinez have lousy defense. His 6.46 makes him a value pick at thirdbase. Bill Madlock is nice in an 80 mil league.

DonFesq uses Tubby at thirdbase if I pass on him, how about that for an endorsement.[b:cf45a96f64][/b:cf45a96f64]

Thee is no defensive rating that cannot be offset by a combination of offense and low salary. The trick is to define which stone gloves are worth it in your specific circumstance. Experience is the only sure way to find out.

it is possible to thrive with some not so good defense. in a 2010 league,
i used a platoon of jed lowrie (3b-3e11 ) against lefty's and marcus thames (3b-5e65 ) against righties at third - lowrie also injured alot, meaning more playing time for thames - used brandon wood (3b-2e18) as late inning def replacement. working so far.... we'll see what happens in the post season.

i like the team, but i would probably grab someone like e.miller or f.crosetti at SS for some cheap power from the 9 hole.

I hear ya, but it's a keeper league with some card restrictions, which are a bit complicated, but since Eddie Miller's card is for 1945, he's not eligible this time around. Crosetti was taken before I got around to addressing SS in our Diamond Dope live draft. So my 9 hole ain't gonna have much punch this round.

I agree completely. The most false advice that I hear given all the time is that you can not win with X defense at X positions. Sorry but it just ain't that black and white. If Babe Ruth could only play short and was a 5 with max errors but he was just a million dollars I would use him all day and win like crazy. Definitive statements just get on my nerves because they ignore the reality that there is a balance between the offense you get from a guy and the defense you get from him, and the final thing that goes into the equation is salary. You have to take those 3 main things along with things like injuries and speed and so on to put a team together. If you approach this game with a one sided view it only makes things tougher on you. Back in the day Donnie Bush was a 1e68 and priced at below 2 million. I had some good days with that card and tons of people would not touch him. Got me a few titles with the ole boy.

I agree. it all depends on how you put your team together. Bad defense can definitely be made up for with good offense. My Runs and OBP record team also set the record for errors (by a long shot at the time. I've since come closer with other, similar teams).
