One Year Wonder/Best Cards

Since all this talk on NEW cards and what is being added monthly. How about an option that includes 1 Year Wonders/Best Card.

We already have some that are in the regular set:

Gates Brown, Joe Charbonneau and Mark Fidrych.

Some that could be added as an Option ONLY:

Luke Scott(2006), Phil Plantier(1991) and Brady Anderson(1996).

Just because he is one of my all-time favorite Cardinals:

Rick Ankiel - 2000

What a great first year--minus the whole mental breakdown in the playoffs.....It's funny, most players would kill for a breakout year....he had two....as a pitcher and a hitter!

Ankiel had a 2007 card that was a monster.

I believe he was a 5L, and played good D with a great arm.

That card was a monster---hard to get your hands on in the draft, that's for sure.

Maybe we can stretch the rules to include a "one hit wonder" card as a pitcher and a hitter....Ankiel wouldn't be the only one to benefit from this....we could throw in a 2010 Aaron Miles pitching card... :wink:

We could also toss in the 1999 Joe "Little Mac" McEwing. Not an overly impressive line, but .275 with a .730 OPS and 7 positions played....not too shabby. It was also the last time he was a real "everyday" player.

2004 Eli Marerro would be a decent one too. .320/.374/.520 in the OF.

As a longtime Tiger fan -- and sadly one who is old enough to have been to a number of the games the Gater appeared in -- I have to offer at least a token objection to him being put into the one year wonder group. obviously a second ‘good’ year does not a career make but he did have another year in which he put up some pretty good numbers actually with about twice as many at bats as the 'one year' in question. Given his obvious limitations defensively he was not really given much of an opportunity as a full time player.

You know, this isn't really the place I guess, but I'd like to see the '71 Merv Rettenmund card. Pretty solid slash line in 141 games: .318/.422/.448.

Really the guy had a solid career and we already have 3 of his cards. Four times (not counting his 31 game debut in 1968) he posted an OPS+ of 130 or better. Not too shabby...so I guess we really do not NEED another one of him, so I'll get back to 1 hit wonders...

How about 1998 JD Drew....of course he had more than 1 good year...but wow. .414/.463/.972 in 41 PA's. I guess to be real, we should use his 2001 card as that would be considered his "arrival": .323/.414/.613. He was one of my favorites as well....never will forget when he was pelted with batteries in Philly.
