Of course not. It is a fine wintergreen-flavored cordial.

Don Stanhouse '78 (no HR's allowed) and '79 (an actual usable card I would think).

Jim Abbott

I don't know if anyone else has requested it yet, but I'd love to see ANY season from the most inspirational athlete I've ever watched play sports at the highest level. Imagine a Tebow or Jeremy Lin level of coverage on ESPN, only times ten.

If Bernie H. wanted to toss us a bone, how about his final season back with the Angels in 1996 as a $500,000 pitcher that will be a hot commodity as 5th starter filler for four-man rotations?

My personal choice would be his star-crossed 1992 season with the Angels, the very definition of a hard-luck season. Through it all, he never complained as put up some of the best numbers of his career but couldn't buy a win to save his life. 1991 was a great year for him, but 1992 was a character builder that was a great inspiration to me as a young fan.

Interesting note: Jim Abbott and Pete Gray are the only MLB players in the Baseball Reference database with the phase "Bats: Left, Throws: Left , Fields Left as well".

2005 Paul Konerko
2001-2004 Scott Rolen (preferably 2003 but we NEED him regardless)
1995 Hideo Nomo - would be a great addition to 5-man staffs
2002 Miguel Tejada
2008 Brian Roberts (really any decent year)
2003 Carlos Beltran
2000 Luis Castillo
2003 Magglio Ordonez (any good year with white sox, people forget how good this guy was)

RoyalKC - There's a book coming out soon about Jim Abbott written by Tim Brown (Yahoo Sports).

Here's a quote from Brown from an interview in thebiglead.com:

[quote:64f3eb8a9c]The book, titled “Imperfect,” will be released April 3. It has been, by far, the most meaningful and wrenching experience of my career. I felt a great responsibility to Jim, his parents, his wife, their stories and the many people Jim touched.

In the end, we spun his career – his life, even – around the no-hitter he threw at Yankee Stadium. The game came at a time when Jim was first experiencing failure on the baseball field, and so examining who he was, who he was becoming, and what roles the game and his missing right hand played in that.

We decided the no-hitter looked an awful lot like his life – born of some challenge, courageous in parts, perhaps not as surgical in some (there were five walks), aided by others in parts (Wade Boggs, Mike Gallego and Bernie Williams made saving plays), and ultimately something to be proud of.[/quote:64f3eb8a9c]

Thanks nexrad, I'll check it out.

There was a thread somewhere about stadium requests, but I can't find it.

I think the Rockies played in old Mile High Stadium for a year or two. Is that a possibility?

Don Sutton, 1972

Postby BDWard » Sat Mar 10, 2012 1:35 am

Although this card has likely been previously requested, I'd like to see the 1972 Don Sutton card added to the ATG6 player set.

Most of us know that 1968 was the year of the pitcher, resulting in the mound being lowered to restore the balance between pitching and hitting. But if 1968 was the year of the pitcher, 1972 was the rebirth of the pitcher, with many pitchers having unusually good seasons. Perhaps it had something to do with the labor stoppage and the shortened season, as maybe an abbreviated spring training never gave the hitters a chance to catch up to the pitchers.

Of course, the big pitching story for 1972 was Steve Carlton going 27-10 for a doormat Phillies team that won just 59 games. But lost in all the Carlton accolades was the really fine season enjoyed by Sutton. Not only did Sutton go 19-9 for a career best .679 winning percentage, but he posted career bests in ERA (2.08), WHIP (a league best 0.913), hits per nine innings (a league low 6.1) and shutouts (a league leading 9).

If you go to the '70s game site, you can see Sutton's 1972 card. It compares favorably to Carlton's 1972 card, which has long been part of the ATG series. Sutton's 1972 card would probably be in the $9+ mil range.

In support of the Sutton 1972 card, and I've made this argument before for players like Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt, Sutton is a bona fide HOFer, so why shouldn't we have his best season? There are plenty of far lesser players, many who might even be called obscure, for whom we have great seasons, so why not the HOFers?

While I understand that many of us have favorite players who we feel deserve recognition by having their best card, there appears to be little rhyme or reason why we are given the best card for some players and a lesser card for other players. HOFers should be at the top of the list for getting their best card.

1972 Don Sutton would be a fine addition to the ATG6 player set.
