Bull pen roles

Bull pen roles

Postby FUDU » Thu Mar 01, 2012 12:33 pm

Refresher please.

Quality starting staff that are all SP* 8 or 9.

Good set of relievers that are R3-R5, with Eck as closer. (Miljus, Hank Robinson, then Donaldson and Smokey Williams as strong R & L guys)

1. Is there any reason to have relief usage set to anything other than normal? Set closer to maximize, esp w/ an R1 stud correct?

2. When setting up bull pen roles:
A) You want your best reliever as set up?
B) Is it worth having two set up roles?
C) The order in which you list the roles is important? IOW the role atop the list is what HAL will prioritize as he looks over your pen in each situation.
D) If yes to C then is there most ideal way to list the roles from top to bottom?
EG:
Set up
Closer
Middle man
Mop up

not following...why would you need all that relief pitching if you have quality S8*/S9* starters? Seems a waste.

I concur. This must be like a 200M league to have quality starters at 8/9 then $5 of Eck, $4.5 of Miljus, then $6 of Smokey Williams to get righties. Ton of money.

It's a secret 600mil league.

Just kidding, 200mil. Didn't get my hands on all the bats I wanted so I put the cash into the pen for insurance. Regardless of the use of the money I have the guys now so I want to make the best use of them I can until I see a need to make a change else where.

I didn't realize Miljus had the long injury risk so it turns out having extra pen help was a good thing, seeing as he is hurt for the next F'n 10 games.

I have:
Miljus - Set up
Eck - Closer

Wondering if I should set up other roles for the others, if so in what order as to not disrupt the use of my top 2 pen guys?

As I understand he has no greater injury risk than any other reliever. A pitcher going down for 10 games is the online strat version of a mirror universe miracle.

Ah. Hey FUDU, the vagaries of bullpen logic are why I just like to get quality starters and minimize the pen.

That limits the types of teams I can put together, but it's less frustrating.

Yes the order you assign the roles is important. It's a prioritized list AFAIK.

In general, and quite ironically, the more limitations that you put on relievers by assigning specific niche roles...the more you may see extremely head-scratching results. Doesn't mean more frequently, but it means more extreme when it does occur. So, the more relievers/options the better for the AI.

It's all business rules, so what may make sense to us sometimes doesn't make sense to HAL.

So I like to avoid the inevitable "Why didn't he bring in a rested XXXX, instead of letting Andy Hassler pitch to Bagwell?"

Macnole is probably right. But that violates my own rule of "I like to tinker". Just cannot help myself. Sooner or later those roles are going to get assigned.
