Ok, here's my latest offensive juggernaut-- http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/stratomatic/team/team_other.html?user_id=374043

What have been some experiences with Avila? Is the defense really that bad? The equivalent would be about a 1e50, which I was able to live with at SS with Mr. Wagner back in the day (1e54 before the changes)...

This may be my most potent offensive team yet (even without the services of Vaughn and Hornsby), and with the parks in the league, I may even threaten the 1620 runs scored record, if the cards (and dice) fall right. Moving to Avila and spending more on pitching than I normally do with these sorts of teams could be a winning combination, but I'm thinking the defensive hit might cancel out the extra $$ I would invest in pitchers.

Just spitting in the wind and looking for some input. Thanks guys.

If you do go with 'offense over defense' at 2nd base, Larry Doyle (if available) gives another LH bat. You currently have 5 everyday right handed hitters. He also strenghtens your lineup a little against righties. Right now I would not want to be a RH'ed pitcher facing your lineup.

My believe is Collins should stay.

If you do go cheaper at 2nd, I would spend the money on a top tier reliever that can log a lot of innings.

The league is heavily slanted to Righty and slugger parks, which is good for me. There is one Dunn (not in my division) and the closest to a pitching park is Hilldale (6/6, 13/16) All the rest are slugger parks or heavy righty parks.

Hence my R-slanted pitching staff.

Also, Doyle is not available.

analysis for Munich Man

Postby hackra » Fri Mar 02, 2012 8:34 am

Rick,
if you are a believer in Dean TSC's more recent defensive NERP analysis, Avila's 3e20 at 2b will cost you 14.5 runs over the season whereas Collins 1e13 will save you 8.4 runs (assuming neither gets injured this is a net difference of 22.9 runs or an average of 0.14 runs per game)

from the same NERP analysis and assuming a 70% rh to 30% lh pitching mix Avila's will get you an offensive NERP of 25.31 runs in a bomber park like Fulton and Collins will get you a similar offensive NERP of 25.28 in the same park. (BR analysis gives you similar values offensively for the 2 guys as well as does RC/27)

In my opinion, there is a lot more to this than just NERP scores, and so you really do need to consider the player in context as well as other factors (do you believe lineup position matters, how much do you value clutch rating, how much do you value 600PA, speed, bunting, stealing, what is your gut/gestalt feeling about seeing that name in your lineup, how do you feel about facing the player you drop on another team, how smoothly did the last batch of lager go down....stuff like that)

My take -
Avila will give you similar offensive run production to Collins, better clutch by a lot, lower injury risk, an extra $3.3 million to spend and his value will be enhanced if facing more than 30% LHP.

Collins will give you better defense saving a significant number of runs with his glove over the year, better footspeed and stealing, has better trade potential (imo), hits more triples (I know you like those), his value will be enhanced if you face more than 70% RHP.

best of luck with the squad!

Thanks for the great analysis. muddies the waters quite a bit for me. Good points for both.

I was just looking at the Gil McDougal card. Also a 15-game injury, but the injury roll on a 2, not a 3, and looks like he would put up similar numbers to Avila. ONly a 2e13 which is livable.

Does anybody have experience with his card? He's a newer addition, so no DD actuals info.

I used to use Gil quite a bit in ATG 3 or 4 and he always performed very well for me in a hitters park. If you play in a lot of righty parks and face several righties he might be a very good fit. He hits well in the 2 slot.

Oops, didn't look at SS for McDougal. Hmmm... actuals not that good in comparison, but no data for Fulton County.

Ok, I went crazy. Dumped both Collins AND Wagner and went with McDougal and Wells. I'm all for injury risk, but having two 3-roll injuries up the middle hurt too much, given that all but Ruth and Cobb are not 15 gamers.

I have a good feeling about McDougal, especially given the park makeup and predominant RHP in the league.

Let's see what happens...

It was ATG 2 I used to use him in. Here is one team that was 100,000 and I won it all. http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/baseball/stratomatic/atg2/team/team_other.html?user_id=54950
