Thoughts on using the F ratings for pitchers

This is something that I've never really taken the time to tinker with, choosing to instead rely on bullpen settings and team preferences to control how long a starter stays in the game. I'm thinking it's probably about time I get with the program and start giving it a try.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to best use the "Don't Rel B4" settings in the pitchers tab? Do you use it differently in different caps? What's the standard for pulling a Pedro Martinez, vs pulling a $5-6m dollar starter?

for me it depends on the pitchers card and the league cap.

for instance if in a 80/100 mil league - i will only set it for my elite top 2 or 3 SPers (7mil+) or if i am attempting to use a Super RP.

140 mil league - depends on the strength of my bullpen, but usually i will set them at F7.

i always set them at F7 for SP or F5 for Super RP roles.

Maybe go back and read your box scores to take notice of F levels of your pitchers at the end of games even if they've been hit pretty well or at the point of game in which HAL made a call to the bullpen. Use as a starting point?

I rarely use the settings. The exception is if my bullpen is exhausted from the previous series, I'll make a temporary setting to keep the next starter in as long as possible.

My teams generally have a decent bullpen. Otherwise, I would probably feel differently.

Any F rating lower than the full F9 severely stacks the odds against the pitcher.

In pulling stats across multiple seasons... literally from the boxscores of each and every game played... it shows that at reduced F levels the rolls move from 50-50 split (batter card vs. pitcher card) to higher percentages on the hitters card... . even at F8 it is a big jump on its way to almost 67/33 at F0

My philosophy in the board game, with fatigue rules, used to be "I'd still rather have the Pete Alexander type aces in the game even when tired" (with a couple extra singles added to the pitcher card)... but with the way the F rating seems to work, it is a whole new philosophy.. better to have a Less effective reliever with only 50 pct on hitter card than an ace with only 40 pct on the pitchers card.

I would agree. And I would think this is even more true in the ATG game than in the 200x game. And becomes even more important as the caps go up and all the rolls for hitters cards are extra damaging.

Taking a look at past box scores it looks like, for the most part, my settings have been doing the same job, but I'm going to add the F8 rule in there just to make sure.

I thought I'd try the F8 rating on my starters, because I don't have a very effective or deep bullpen. On successive batters, the F rating went down to F5, F4 and on and he never was pulled?!! Heck with that - I zilched the F ratings - didn't seem to be working or I'm not understanding the system.

If you use the F rating you should also check Quick Hook. That way they get pulled pretty quickly after they reach the F rating you set for them.
