P3: Padre's Prospect Proposal

Postby tcochran » Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:25 pm

[quote:fd794d954a="padrenurgle"]padrenurgle - Yes. 3 players per team. I think it's VERY IMPORTANT to limit the number of prospects we can keep, otherwise the annual free agent draft will suck. There will never be any exciting new players in the standard draft if we have 120 minor leaguers locked up. Very few per team, 3 or 4. Draft order random and snaking. Minor league players may be kept forever or until carded for the first time. Established players who don't get carded one year are not eligible as "prospects."[/quote:fd794d954a]

Hey Padre, help us understand the fine print. It looks like you are suggesting a 3-round prospect draft, with each team keeping a total of 3 or 4 prospects at any one time. Is that what you meant?

Hi -

I didn't think it all the way through, but the main thing is we don't want a basket of 10 prospects per team. If we have that, the fundamental yearly draft we've always used will be come meaningless. Any new talent will already be locked up if our minor leagues are that deep. I'm thinking something like a 3-round prospect draft, and maybe yes, only 4 or so prospects held over each year. If you like the three guys you already have, you'll only use 1 of your prospect draft picks the next year. Something like that.

Do you see the problem that I do with a bigger minor league system than that?

Padre,

I am in several leagues were we draft 4 prospects and it works well.

Keeping 10 prospects has not happened yet. You hurt your team stockpiling rather than promoting prospects. At the same time a team that is struggling can trade veterans for prospects and rebuild. At that point a team may have more than 3 or 4.

Some really look forward to the prospect draft and seem to enjoy more than the FA draft.

I am confident you will not be disappointed if that is the way we go.

HAL may be saying that, like the Bums of 1955, it just might be the year for Joe's team to take it all.
