[quote:542bb55ab1]So, I checked Valen's managerial record. He only had one team in ATG, which did do well ,90-72. But of his twelve teams in ATG II, his winning pct. was only .478. So I have to wonder if there is more than one example of Valen's teams that used this strategy successfully. I'd love to see them.[/quote:542bb55ab1]
As I have stated before Valen is not the id I originally started playing under. Switched around the time the boards changed over.
I was strictly a 200x player for several years. And as I stated this was a strategy I used a few times in 2001 game and as stated was used as a draft recovery strategy. If I got the players I wanted I stayed with them. If I missed on most rather than settle for whatever was left found sometimes better to keep money unspent because I noted in almost every league there were good players getting dropped. Dropping players to clear cap room was self defeating strategy. But if you left 10 mil or so unspent you could usually count on being able to add 2 good players between games 20 and 40.
I did not play ATG when it first came out. Began migrating when ATG2 came out and for a long time draft strategy was to get my favorite players from childhood.
Combine that with always being in leagues with more experienced ATG managers than myself who drafted the best cards and you have formula for a losing record. Did not care. I was getting to use my favorite players and played with my heart, not my head. I probably still build most teams with my heart and not my head. Any increase in winning percentage is more due to addition of favorites with good cards than improved strategy.
Suppose that is part of reason I defend most managers right to run their teams as they see fit. I always have and probably always will. For example if I have Bob Gibson or Lou Brock or Vince Coleman do not even bother sending an offer. You will not be able to overpay enough. But even as I write that do not want to leave impression I support the kind of things that have been discussed in this thread.
