I have never failed to have Babe Adams used as a relief pitcher as I desired. It is relatively simple, list him as closer, setup, late innings and tied situations. Have the rest of your staff be righty or lefty specialists. Have your starting pitchers be less than 7 innings, although in more expensive leagues I like 1 starter to be a 9 inning stud to give Babe a day of rest to be brought back in. Set your bullpen to very aggressive, Babe to slow hook and do not relive before R7 or R8 depending on how good you want your other relievers and you'll get 300+ innings for sure
HAL likes to relieve with Babe because he costs a lot and is a R5. I can always get more prime innings out of Babe than any other reliever. HAL will leave him in for 4-6 innings easily and wants to use him because of his high cost. You do need to list a starting pitching staff because otherwise HAL will be confused. I would never select mop-up because that role is intended for a pitcher who is never going to come in unless the team situation is hopeless. How in the world is HAL to determine oh yeah I want this guy in the most important situations and I want to save him for the hopeless situations?
HAL will use BABE all the time as a relief pitcher without a problem, I think if all the settings and use were made absolutely simple the skill of the game would be reduced. The idea that Bernie should be able to deduce how to make the settings to get a result and act as a consultant to the top player is being ludicrous. Careful attention to what HAL actually does will help.
OH and listing the other pitchers as lefty specialists and righty specialists (especially if they really are) will help.
