Bullpen Problem?

I agree w/Valen and others who feel this way. There's no way I'm using an $8 mill pitcher for mop up work. The worst thing that can happen (IMHO) is to burn 4 innings when my team is losing 9-2. Let's say I make a game of it and lose 9-7, but Babe is cooked for the next game. That next game I'm up 7-5 and I'm forced to use bottom of the barrel pitchers and lose another game when those pitchers give up 4 runs in a loss.

I'd rather use his innings to shut down my opponent in a tight game or when I have the lead. Most innings isn't the goal for me, most QUALITY innings is.

Maybe not the right tone to offer a smile, but...

I was thinking more losing 8-2. Adams comes in, stops the other team and you pull out a 11-10 game. Hal will let Adams pitch 5 innings or so back to back and four out of five games without fatigue. I have used Adams in all roles including mop up many times with success.

I agree on the latter mop-up sentiment. I think of it this way--it's not about getting him to pitch half the team's innings--that's nonsensical. Babe cannot physically pitch every game, and some will just have to be losses. If he comes in at 8-2, then maybe he isnt available the next game when you are up 3-2, and then lose it.

But getting to pitch in most of the team's most critical innings--yes.

Anytime we turn on every rule/role to a prioritized business rule environment, it creates unintended consequences. There is no "decision space" for the AI because the environment is too constrained. If it were me, I'd back off the roles one by one until the desired effect is achieved by the algorithm.

I just went back and looked at my season w/403 innings and Babe was fatigued plenty of times even when not pitching 5 innings. I was happy to have him play in 104 games, and average nearly 4 innings/game played. The guy had almost 1/3 of my team's wins, but he certainly didn't pitch 5 innings 4 out of every 5 games. That would be approx 130 games pitched, and even with just 4 innings/game you're looking at 518 IP in a season.

Has anyone noticed Babe Adam's save rate?

Just out of curiousity I went and looked at a number of teams where i have him as my main RP and as a closer.

Caveat: I play large cap leagues mainly

BUT- has anyone noticed that his save rate is generally not that high.
What Im saying is that if I put him as my middle and set-up man and someone else as the 'closer' that my save rate seems to be a lot higher.

Maybe its just me?

If this is true then the problem needing fixed is that there is not more fatigue penalty for this type excessive usage.

While I agree it is not Bernie or SOM place to make a super reliever strategy realistic or workable, I do also agree with nev's over all point that the roles should be defined well enough where the managers (us) can set them up and have them work like a well oiled machine works 95% of the time.

Since I'm not one who racks up a lot of free credits, my advice is for those that do take 3 or 4 of them and run the experiment. Get Adams and set him up in the vast majority of roles, back off one role (maybe go by critical innings role) each season and track the results.

It seems my style of using Adams does not apply to all. I never expect 400 innings out of him. I use him as my main guy but not my only guy in 200mil and live leagues and get about 170 innings from him. I checked a recent team and found he never came in at less than F9. He did pitch a lot of innings with no or short rest. A few were 15.2 innings pitching 6 of 8 games, 20.0 in 6 of 9, 10.2 in 3 of 4, 13 in 3 of 4 and 24 in 10 of 15 games. He came in as mop up, middle man, set up and tied. Hal didn't seem confused by the multiple settings.

I like having him as a mop up guy because a typical line up of mine against rightys would have Mike Schmidt as the weakest hitter. So throwing in the towel after only being down by six runs is not an option.
