Just my common sense meter here, but if what Boyd says was true, don't you think someone would have or will come out and back him up?
If it isn't true, or it has been exaggerated, then you'd expect to hear what we are hearing now...nothing. Nobody wants to be involved in something like this unless they feel strongly one way or another. It's a troublesome accusation, the kind that you have to feel pretty grounded in your stance if you are going to go public.
We've got the Boston media printing and broadcasting every time a player golfs or eats chicken or drinks a beer, and a lot of these same guys were around during Boyd's time. But nobody knew this was happening?
I'm inclined to think Dennis stretched the truth.
He may be "colorful" and "eccentric" ...

How many stories have been in the media lately that had not come out publicly, yet had been going on for years?
Didn't we just have a series of sexual abuse charges levied against coaches that no one reported on until now?

My common sense meter tells me if this assumption is to be believed wouldn't it also have been reported that Oil Can constantly pitched high and coked up?
OR....
My assumption is the clubhouse knew or strongly suspected Boyds' drug usage but kept it in house...like they might keep a racist or two and their comments in house...can't have it both ways guys.

All true, which is why now that the cat is out of the bag, let's hear from the team and the rest of the Red Sox organization. If anyone was going to corroborate this it would be them and/or the media.
Boston media fight each other to throw a player under the bus, so it shouldn't take long. The ratings war here is just the engine to get the truth out.
For the record, it wouldn't surprise me if Boggs did call him that, but not in the frequent manner that Oil Can claims. That's what smells funny to me. I don't have much respect for either guy, they both have warts all over them as far as I'm concerned. Both guys have gone public with crazy claims that make any sane person laugh...and I've heard stories of Boyd and his drug use long before this came out, just like we knew about Boggs drinking cases of beer in a sitting.

Racism is still a part of our culture, it just is more subtle now-
and really most of us dont even realize when we are doing it.
Here is something I did when I was a few years younger:
I was trying to describe a beautiful woman who was working with me to an african american friend of mine.
But, instead of just saying she was african-american, I described her by comparing her features to a few other famous black women;
Fortunately, my friend was nice enough to point out to me what I was doing without being overly judgemental or condescending- and I actually had to stop and think about why I had done that- and although its not the worse thing in the world, hopefully, its not something to repeat.
