What's in a name?

It seems nowadays that solar eclipses are more prevalent than new leagues forming....

Anyways, I have always wondered what is the driving force behind the manager names in this game and thought maybe some of you would like to share. I recently read a post wherein wachovia07 named his after a bad investment and thought it might be interesting to hear some others.

Mine is not as cryptic as most and is more of a senitmental homage to my father who took me to my first game in '72.

Well my Dad took me to my first game at Candlestick Park in 1962. Mets/Giants. Old Candlestick, before they enclosed it. They had bleachers in right field (real, old fashioned bleachers) and you could see Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard out in the distance. And talk about cold. Brrrrr!! Anyhow my user name is after Hal Lanier of the old SF Giants and 1964 is my favorite year. I usually have Johnny Yuma skipper my teams because he is a rebel. Anyone remember the old Johhny Cash song: The Rebel Johnny Yuma?

I've always been a big fan of the Coen Bros.

From Raising Arizona:

[u:cac7b6545e]Machine Shop Ear-Bender:[/u:cac7b6545e] So we were doin' paramedical work in affiliation with the state highway system. Not actual practice, you understand. And me & Bill were patrolling down Nine Miles.

[u:cac7b6545e]H.I.:[/u:cac7b6545e] Bill Roberts?

[u:cac7b6545e]Machine Shop Ear-Bender:[/u:cac7b6545e] [b:cac7b6545e]No, not that motherscratcher[/b:cac7b6545e]! Bill Parker. Anyway, we're approaching the wreck, and there's this spherical object a restin' in the highway. And it's not a piece of the car.

I just always got a big kick out of that line. It's been my ether username for as long as I can remember.

Most of my team names are derived from The Big Lebowski

In this age of identity theft and computer hackers and such as that, mine is.....uh....well, um...... ...mine is.....well, it has [b:86fac17936]NOTHING [/b:86fac17936]to do with my real name or birthdate. Yeah, [b:86fac17936]nothing at all[/b:86fac17936]............nada......nichts....rien.....nil
Cause that would be stupid, to use my real name and birthdate.........

When I'm not playing Franchise or Theme Leagues (which is [b:86fac17936]most [/b:86fac17936]of the time), I name my teams Delta, like Delta Heat, Delta Force, Delta Dirtbags, Delta etc because I grew up in the Mississippi Delta region and my son has played on numerous teams called Delta something........also graduated from Delta State University in Cleveland, where Boo Ferriss coached baseball for over 30 years and still resides. At the age of 90, Boo still makes it to every home game the Statesmen play and keeps a scorecard for each game, and he is the nicest man you would ever want to meet.....

My team names and managers are whatever show I've seen or musical event, or book I'm reading while I'm putting the team together.

Recently, Johnny Ramone, Levon Helm, and Woody Guthrie.

A Honyock, in my neck of the woods, is basically a rube, imbecile, idiot, etc. One friend in particular and I refer to each other as Honyocks on a regular basis. Such as, "What the hell were you thinking, Honyock?" or, "Hey Honyock, pass me a beer!"

Honyox is just the plural, getting the 'cks' sound with the 'x'. As for my managerial name, Miles O'Tool??? Well, a guy can always dream. :P

Very FUN Question OakAth!

Im much like Andy- Im El-Saltman b/c I am Saltman- I stole the el part from El-Cid or a million other Els, like Ernie for example.
(im saying this so the people that hate me can track me down)

My team names have varied from Salt puns, such as 'Sawlty Towers' to
animal-thropormorphisms like 'Disgruntled teen-Rhinos', to StarWars names 'Furious Yodas', to books like the 'Portable Curmudgeon', to the current incarnation of things that I also name some classical pieces that I write- like 'the left of spring'.

I was a child of the 70's CB Radio craze. My "handle" (think "Bandit") was uninspiring, but a very close friend of mine used [b:a549a8a052]Mighty Moose[/b:a549a8a052]. He was a law enforcement officer but a Paul Bunyon'eske mountain of a man at 6"5" and 280. The type of cop you wouldnt want facing you down if you're a bad guy. But also a loyal and true friend.

I eventually grew up and moved away, but being somewhat of a large man myself (more "round" than the more lean and mean original Moose), I felt that keeping his handle alive would keep his memory alive for years to come, so I "adopted" it. My homage to a great man.
