Bobby Abreu - Mr Strat?

BTW Marquis has very reasonably priced productive cards in 05 and 06 and has been and will be on many of my teams.

"Also, along with the lazy factor, there seems to be no urgency or fire in him at the plate. It seems a Strikeout is..."eh..just a strikeout" to him and no big deal, especially with runners on".

Hooner,

I can see your point and understand it.

But, the season is 162 games and for Abreu, usually 600 or more AB's. However, at the major league level, if you can't get over the fact that "a strikeout is just a strikeout" and get on with the game/season, your career will be a short one.

I always wanted to use Abreu since I am from central Pa and have followed his career since he was traded to Philly (from San Diego I believe). I haven't tried to use him yet as I was always drawn to Ichiro or more recently, Shawn Green (someone who I would have never thought of using until this game).

If memory serves me correctly, I remember Tampa Bay taking Abreu from the Astros (he had seen one or two cups of coffee with them in the year or two prior) in the Expansion Draft. Then, Tampa Bay dealt him to Philly for Kevin Stocker. Talk about one of the more lopsided trades ever ...

I believe the first unofficial Mr. Strat was John Olerud.

For a number of season, he hit .280 or better, usually around .400 OBP
15-20 HR's.

Usually a 1 on defense.

Hooner that is some funny stuff! I'd not heard that one before. I hate to tell you this but I go to a few Phillies games each year and well, um, I think you hit the bullseye there. I respect Philly fans for not falling all over every guy who can lay down a sacrifice bunt.

St. Louis Cardinals fans are the polar opposite of Phillies fans. If a Phillies fan would indeed boo a HR for not going far enough, a Cardinals fan would cheer Ray Lankford for striking out with the bases loaded because, oh heck, it's Willie McGee Appreciation Day and we all got a free corn dog. I think they based the Simpsons Ned Flanders character on St Louis Cardinals fans. They're saintly -- except when it comes to their inexplicable wrath towards Tony LaRussa.

Soca - Wow, Olerud! Definite Mr Strat type. I could never get my hands on him in his prime. His 2006 card ain't too shabby.

Olerud

I mean, Abreu has been over 5M every year since TSN started---and only defense prevented him to be over the 7M bar every year. Is there a year that Olerud earned over 5M????

Abreu is definitively Mr.Strat. There is no player that is so highly esteemed in this community compared to what people believe in real-life, as extremely well examplified by Hooner--although it must be said that Abreu did catch some eyes with his homerun crown during last All-star and his gold glove.

Contrary to Hooner, though, I think that the Strat world is correct on this one---and that the rest of the World---the Philly fans in particular---have still not appreciated the full value of Abreu.

mac - I have to take issue with you here and defend the honor of Mr Bobby Abreu. Vladdy is a superb player. But he's chronic high GBA and, many years, he's so overbalanced to be neutralized, if you're facing mostly RHP. I just don't think he's anywhere near the complete Strat player Abreu has been on a consistent basis.
