Season starts tomorrow....repost of key rules.

Postby JOSEPHBONK » Sun Apr 02, 2006 6:54 am

With the season starting tomorrow, I wanted to repost the key rules of the league. Since we cannot drop players after game 142, we will not follow the roster expansion section noted in the original post, rosters will not be expanded replicating the September 1st call up. Here's a summary of the key rules....

Player usage:

[b:08e67cfae3]Roster size[/b:08e67cfae3]: Rosters must be maintained at 25 players. Teams cannot carry 26, 27 or 28 players on an active roster until completion game 138. (Further explained below) Also, rosters cannot be less then 25 players. You must have 25 players on your roster at all times. There will be a disabled list which will be explained shortly.

[b:08e67cfae3]Hitters:[/b:08e67cfae3] Usage will be limited to the players 5 year average of plate appearances (hits plus walks) plus an additional 10%.

[b:08e67cfae3]Pitchers:[/b:08e67cfae3] Usage will be limited to the players 5 year average of innings pitched plus an additional 10%.

Once a player exceeds the 110% of their plate appearances or innings pitched, they must be dropped and a replacement player selected. If players are dropped or traded, their usage does not reset. Once a player has used up their allotted at bats/innings pitched, they cannot be used by anyone in the league.

[b:08e67cfae3]Disabled list:[/b:08e67cfae3] To assist each manager in ensuring player usage remains within usage requirements, each manager can place up to 2 players on their disabled list at any one time. This will be accomplished by announcing your intention to place a player on the disabled list via sending an e-mail to all members of the league. Please send an e-mail to the league members prior to making your roster move. When a player is placed on the DL, he remains the property of the original owner. Remember that you will still be responsible for the financial impact associated with this transaction. This option will be available to the owners until game 139. Players placed on the DL must remain there for at least 4 series (12 games). After 12 games, the manager must reclaim their players prior to the next night’s games. If a player is not returned to the active roster, he can be picked up by any owner. Failure to restore the player to the roster after exposes him to all other league owners. Example: Player A is placed on the DL after game 3. He sits out the next 4 series-it is now the night/morning of games 16,17 and 18. If Player A is not placed back on the roster of the original owner, any team can pick up the player at the conclusion of game 18.

In order to use the DL does the player placed on the DL have to be injured?

If you can put an uninjured player on the DL can you, when taking a player off the DL, put the original replacement on the DL, or does he have to be dropped? :?

If I DL an uninjured Chris Bando and replace him with Jamie Quirk can I put the uninjured Quirk on the DL when Bando comes off?

Roster talk......DL question...

[[i:6e3ec8df73]quote="Rigged Splits"]In order to use the DL does the player placed on the DL have to be injured?[/i:6e3ec8df73]

[b:6e3ec8df73]Negative. The player does not need to be injured. The DL can be used to shelter a player if you are concerned with the number of plate appearances or innings pitched or for any other reason you see fit.[/b:6e3ec8df73]

[i:6e3ec8df73]If you can put an uninjured player on the DL can you, when taking a player off the DL, put the original replacement on the DL, or does he have to be dropped? :?[/i:6e3ec8df73]

[b:6e3ec8df73]The original replacement will be available for all teams. Anyone can select him as a replacement player. The goal here is not to create a shadow roster of 26 or 27 players. The players on your 25 man roster are yours until you release them. If you wish to keep a replacement player, you will need to add them to your 25 man roster and release another player.[/b:6e3ec8df73]

[i:6e3ec8df73]If I DL an uninjured Chris Bando and replace him with Jamie Quirk can I put the uninjured Quirk on the DL when Bando comes off?[/quote][/i:6e3ec8df73]

[b:6e3ec8df73]Negative. In your example, Jamie Quirk would be available for anyone to select once you returned Chris Bando to your roster. As alternative would be to announce to the league that you are releasing Chris Bando and will retain Jamie Quirk.[/b:6e3ec8df73]

Make sense??

It seems like

In the Bando/Quirk example, he should be able to put Quirk on the DL when Bando comes back, but he would only have rights to Quirk for 12 games, like any other DL move.

It didn't say in the rules that you have to drop a guy's replacement when he comes back, did it?

Roster moves/disabled list

The original rules did not specifically address this situation. My thought is if we allow Jamie Quirk to remain the property of the team, we have, in effect, established a 26 man roster. An owner could simply rotate two players every 12 games on the DL. (I realize there will be a financial impact to this strategy-perhaps that is sufficient to limit this activity??) An alternative to consider is to limit the number of times a player may be placed on the DL. I considered this but felt it would be a challenge to keep track of the number of trips to the DL for each team/player. Part of the challenge of this approach is to force the manager to make choices such as between Jamie and Chris Bando (or someone else on the 25 man roster) not use the DL to create a shadow roster.

I'm open to hearing input from everyone else as to how to deal with the scenario described. I'd like to have this finalized by 9:00 EDT on Monday so that everyone is aware of the rules before we start play.

I know it's hard to address every scenario but if anyone else can think of potential scenarios, please post them and we will address prior to play.

Don't worry about the DL. When it is used it will be a stud that is being over used like Eric Davis or Kevin Mitchell. The financal impact alone will keep it to necessary moved. Not much to be gained in rotating cheapies for DL purposes unless you have a killer year from some one. It is cheaper and easy just to keep them out of the lineup (easier to do with position players than pitchers, but can be done). A starter having too may AB, sit him for a series, or vs LHP. Pitchers can go out of the rotation or user per game starters. RP can go on mop duty, etc.

The DL is an expensive option, and in the last league was little used. My two cents it that replacments are just that...free game after being dropped

YountFan is right --- last time we did this theme, as I recall, the players that managers used the DL for weren't really the expensive studs --- YF, didn't several of us managers purposely hold some big dollar players out of series early in the season to help limit their AB's ?? I know I used the DL for two relievers. Mohorcic went there twice because he was kicking butt and Hal kept going to him. I think Burke was the other, but I don't remember exactly.

YF, post your excel spreadsheet if you can. I saved it from the last league, and have it loaded with my team to keep track of from the start. That will help people monitor useage. thanks

I'll post the progress of the players at 27 game intervals. It won't be hard to do
