3B in the Kingdome

Postby AdamKatz » Mon Apr 03, 2006 5:49 pm

Up in the air about what 3B to use in the Kingdome (other 3 parks in division are average):

Buddy Bell, Darrell Evans, George Bell, Decincess or Parrish. Normally, I would take Buddy Bell, but in the Kingdome should I hjust concentrate on HRs?

DeCinces. You need some defense too to help your pitchers.

I missed on all 8 of my position players in the draft and got first waiver pick. Just about every pitcher that cost more than 6.5 million was available.

Wallach has BPHR effects in all years that are only helped by the Kingdome. Even his worst year can produce 35+ HR with a .300 OBP. He is 600+PA in 4 of 5 years. Can't say that about DeCinces. Wallach is also more balanced where Doug tilts to lefties all years.

You know how every draft or two, there is some guy who somehow got 5 first picks (Rickey, Yount, Sandberg, Schmidt, etc...). I tried that. Went 0 for 8. Got Clark instead of Mattingly. The only other players on my team over 1 million that I drafted and got were Cox and Lee Smith. Oh well. Got Clemens, Hig (after people drafter Hersheiser, Gooden and Blylevan), Hrbk from waivers and frenzied after waivers.

In any case...

I usually get Horner or Hojo (or Molitor or Boggs or Guerrero) at 3rd so I am trying to decide among players I have never used. I have tried to trade Buddy Bell for Horner or Hojo (who are playing in the Astrodome and Yankee Stadium) but the trades have been rejected. Tried to get Molitor who is being used as a DH (with Gibson and Lonnie Smith playing the outfield) but that didnt work out either. I think the Horner in the Astrodome trade is a no brainer for both of us, but...

Wallach is taken. I dont like Decinces because he only has 2 years over .800 OPS and, as you said, he is a 3L. His two best years are really good, but his best year is a 4L. I never tried him though-maybe his cards are better than his stats.

Would you still advocate taken him over the pure fielding of Buddy Bell and the pure power of George Bell and Darrell Evans (both 4e37s). I don't mind playing 4s at 3B but that is alot of errors for someone whose name does not rhyme with Medro Muerrero.

Larry Parrish is also available and he seems lke a better bargain than the above, but I don't have an immediate need to save $.

On the saving $ subject though, I have Presley on the bench already. Should I just go cheap and platoon him with Pagliarulo?

Buddy bell is pretty good in all, you have plenty of power with daniels, clark, hrbek, Dawson etc. Bell is a good hitter near the bottom of the order and a very good fielder. He is at least as good as pendleton, provided you don't get his dud year.

Evans

Postby honestiago1 » Tue Apr 04, 2006 3:21 pm

I used Evans all year at 3B in a league, and he didn't do too badly on the e's. But I had his 41 HR year, so that made it worth my while. The less bat, the morse balance you need. If Bonilla was having a monster year, I'd even use him at 3B.

More 3B questions...Horner?

Postby JIMDAKE » Fri Apr 14, 2006 10:38 am

Drafted Bell and got Horner. I'm in Anaheim & the league is mostly hitter parks (bracket 2). Is Horner worth the extra hits and e's? Closest good field/good hit available for waivers is Gaetti but I only see 2 good years and not so great vs RHP. Other options are Nettles & Gruber.

Hard to say without knowing other available free agents.

I've used Nettles with some success. (If you use Nettles, grab a .75-1.00 RH backup or two (Presley, Buechele, Jackson, etc.), but you may not even need to platoon.) Nettles might not kill you at 3B either offensively or defensively, and with the extra cash, you can upgrade other areas. But this assumes there are good free agents at other positions.

Post-waivers update: Wound up with Jacoby. Only 3 range but pretty e19 isn't too bad & looks like excellent value. Seems to have a lot of fans on these boards.
