Interest in an 80s invitational in the near future?

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

[quote:f0d2fa3d4e]2nd thing - Even though I suggested the tourney, and will provide some incentive ($50 check to the champion), I'd prefer not to have the tourney named after me as I am nowhere near an acknowledged master in this format. Let's keep beating the bushes for a few more players!

Thanks for the support!

If you have a paypal account and want to add $50 bucks to the pool, I'll be happy to contribute to the prize money.

We need a Leader

Postby LMBombers » Wed Apr 05, 2006 7:57 pm

Sog came up with the idea but says that he doesn't want to organize it. We need one of the 80's vets to come forward and volunteer to make the decisions that need to be made when the time comes and maybe set down the ground rules for the tournament.

Some decisions that need to be made at some point include:

when to cut off entries and start the tournament.

how an ultimate winner is determined

how to fill out the leagues if the total number of entries is not divisible by 12.

how many leagues comprise the tournament

Will every league be the standard 80m, autodraft, etc. or will there be some live drafts, unique parks, etc.

do players need to select a different park for each different league

There are many other things to make official besides the above. We need ground rules and we need a leader/organizer.

Volunteers?

I'm not in a hurry to start this up. I would love to wait for the updated version of this game but it never hurts to become more organized prior to kicking things off.

If nobody else is interested, I'd be glad to help put this thing together.

Depending on how complicated you want to make things, I would be interested in joining you. I have started playing the 80's game again and actually am finding it a fun break from ATG.

TRich ran an 80's tournament when the product was first released and kept it simple as follows:

You start with three leagues and the bottom four teams from season one get dropped. The remaining 24 teams form two leagues and this time the bottom 6 get dropped. The remaining 12 play in the championship league to determine the overall winner.

Now in that original tournament we were limited in ball park choices (was one hitter/pitcher/nuetral park) so that each round you had to play in a different "style" of stadium, but the rest was autodraft.

If you are looking to mirror the 2006 tour or the ATGII Barnstormers tour then that requires a whole additional layer of work.

Personnally, I favor this simple format. I'd suggest, though, that we use (1) unique stadiums or, at least, (2) unspecified stadiums. I agree with someone above who stated that an all, for ex., Fenway league leads to everyone going after the same types of players and dilutes the skill factor in putting together a team. I also would favor some sort of seeding, perhaps by # of championships, % of playoff teams or something like that. If we have 36 teams (3 leagues), the top 9 guys (figured out by some formula) would be staged throughout the 9 divisions.

why not just use the Manager rankings to seed the players?

Also, I like the idea of the first round being double elimnation, i.e. from 36 teams, the 12 teams with the worst record that did not make the playoffs after 2 seasons are cut.
From 24 teams, cut 6 from each league.
Then 12 team finals.

Just throwing that out there since someone mentioned it above, but I am ok with 3 single elimination rounds.

I agree re: manager rankings (pretty obvious!). I don't like double elimination - its already difficult to keep people together for a tournment like this as it is. One and done makes more sense to me.
