Hunch feature - that's why my conservative bunting team has so many freakin! suicide squeezes!!!!!
After the game manager HAL said - "I had a hunch that pinch hitting Gallego for Mays was just the right thing to do....

Treyomo: with all due respect, the example you cited is not completely egregious. I'm not saying it was expert managing, but there's only so much you can expect the computer to do given the extraordinary circumstances.

1. McLain hit for himself, then pitched another inning. That makes fine sense. You make it sound like he hit for himself then left the game immediately.
2. I can't explain why McLain was taken out after the 7th, though, but given that, the computer had a tired bullpen to work with due to [i:22085a4cfb]two consecutive 13-inning games[/i:22085a4cfb] before this game.

Again, I'm not saying everything went perfectly, but you can't expect the computer to be that much smarter than what it did every time, given the wild circumstances. You DO have a point that McLain seemed like he could go further than 7, and so I thank you for pointing out a place in the code where I need to insert further diagnostic traces.

Otherwise, I don't consider it a true "horror story" unless the computer fails under more obviously normal circumstances.

I agree, bernie. HAL did the only thing it could do once it went to the bullpen, since Bennett is the only RP rated pitcher who would not have been fatigued. In this case, its bullpen management worked perfectly once it got into the pen. Its SP management is the only question, because it pulled a non-fatigued RHSP and brought in a 9L to face a string of 6 of 7 RH hitters.

Had this been a S7 pitcher, I would have zero complaint. I did not have McLain on slow hook, but my understanding of the conservative bullpen usage is that a SP who is not fatigued due to excessive baserunners in the previous inning and has not reached his IP/pitch count limit would be allowed to continue with a 2-1 lead, especially if there was nothing in the offensive side of the inning that called for a PH. I don't expect HAL to look in my bullpen, see nothing but dead arms, and allow the SP to go beyond his rating/endurance. But I would expect HAL to allow a successful, non-fatigued SP (under a team strategy conservative relief setting) to at least pitch to his endurance limit assuming there is not a situation on offense where a PH for the pitcher could generate insurance runs.

Thanks for looking into this, though.

[quote:76f33853fd]"also, HAL has a [b:76f33853fd]manager hunch feature built in [/b:76f33853fd]which may have told him that Seaver was done[/quote:76f33853fd]

No, there's no "manager hunch feature"; I'm sorry that you were led to believe that. Was it Larry who wrote you that email? He was a knowledgeable SOM guy, but he had a tendency to get a little creative with his reponses.

I have an example of no bullpen control

Postby mridge01 » Thu Apr 06, 2006 12:36 pm

I have a team that had with Randy Niemann, a $.50 pitcher who I picked up mainly to eat innings. I also have Johnny Murphy who is $1.67 mill who I expected to make quality appearance out of the bullpen. After the first 9 games, Niemann became HAL's go to guy out of the pen racking up 3 innings of work while allowing an earned run every time out. In the meantime, Murphy never saw the mound. To make amends, I have figured out one way to keep HAL at bay is to replace cheap half million dollar relievers with half million dollar starter only pitchers and do not put them in the rotation (Since you need a min 10 pitchers). At that point HAL has to use up your quality relievers first and will only go to the half million dollar guy out of necessity. HAL is a wee tricky, so you have to stay a step ahead.

With regard to the reliever selection process, the CD game indicates in the help text that actual IP of a pitcher factors into HAL's decision making. That implies HAL is attempting to level usage of relievers and will override manager tendencies and lefty-righty match ups.

The help text was vague as to how the 'actual IP' rule is applied. It will be interesting if Bernie's traces reveal how this logic works.

That doesn't explain his use of Konstanty then who is good for 4 innings before reaching his POW. There were lots of occasions during the course of the season Konstanty pitched only 1/3 of an inning before getting yanked. Or do you mean ip in his actual stats for that season?
