Interest in an 80s invitational in the near future?

Our Mystery Card games - The '70s Game, Back to the '80s, Back to the '90s

Postby LMBombers » Thu Apr 06, 2006 1:31 pm

Here is my PM to Bernie and his response as to timing of the upgrade. I am not proposing mirroring the 2006 tournament or having TSN sponsoring our tournament. The main thing I wanted from him was the timing of the new 80's modification. He says the changes will happen in less than 6 weeks by the way I read it.

[quote:6f7ff32d7e="bernieh"][quote:6f7ff32d7e="LMBombers"]Bernie,

There is going to be a Players Championship in the 80's game similar to what is happening in the 2006 game. We have close to 30 signups now and growing all the time.

We would like to wait and use the updated 80's game that we think is coming this year but we don't want to wait several months on it. Can you give us some sort of idea as to when this will be rolled out? If it is still months away we are going to start our tournament sooner rather than later. If it is only 6-8 weeks away we would like to wait on it and have the entire tournament in this format.

Thanks,

Randy[/quote:6f7ff32d7e]
Nice! Please let me know who the Commissioner of the tournament will be, and any specifics you might have already. It really needs to be similar to the 2006 Players' Championship in format, if it will have any chance of being sponsored by us.

The changes to the 80s game will be less than 6-8 weeks away.

Thanks,
Bernie[/quote:6f7ff32d7e]

The "community" is going to have to decide whether to go the Tour route or the simple 36-48 team bracket. I've never been involved in a Tour before, but as I understand it, there are 7 different events (live draft, autodraft, etc.) and each player can earn points in each event (e.g., 15 points for winning the title). At the end of the Tour, the 12 teams with the most points (average points in at least 5 events) play a championship series. Somewhat complicated and longterm and may not fit the smaller 80s community.

For the 80s, I'd suggest we go with Sog's plan, which I believe is as follows: Take the 36 or 48 teams, seed them by manager rankings and put them in 3 or 4 brackets. If it is 48, we'll obviously have 4 brackets. Top 8 in each advance (4 playoff teams and teams with the next 4 best records) and are re-seeded into 2 brackets. Winners of each bracket (either initial 4 or last 2) get an automatic bye into the finals, so we could have as many as 6 teams with automatic bids, although there could be a duplicate or two. The remainder of the teams will then be used to fill up the final bracket.

We'll need tiebreakers beyond head-to-head in the likely event we have ties.

I prefer the more straight forward idea that you and Sog have instead of a long tournament.

Well, if we have a more or less firm date from Bernie re: the upgrades, maybe everyone will play now. I could post some final rules and set a start date on another thread and then open it to real signups. Thoughts?

Re: the prizes, it would be nice if TSN kicked in a 5 pack or something like that to the winner, seeing that we drumming up some business for them. Generally, I don't think they owe us anything re: prizes, but seeing that they've provided them for '06, I don't understand why the exact format of the tournament matters. If we get 36 players, I'd be happy to provide my paypal address to collect $2/3 from each player and we could buy the winner a 5 pack.

If I read it correctly, all they are giving for the 2006 tournament, which is something like 8 rounds and a billion people, is a trophy and a one year subscription to the Sporting News so I doubt we will see any meaningfull prize here.

Parks

Postby Panzer ace » Thu Apr 06, 2006 4:23 pm

As far as parks, I liked one of the first suggestions made in the thread. Just keep it simple. You must choose a different park each round. Its up to the manager. Start with the park you feel best in or save it for a final round. Assuming you make it that far.

After receiving additional comments tonight and barring any vetos, I intend to post the rules on a separate thread with an official sign up sheet. I'll propose a start date, say, April 19.
