I'm psyched also but reserved . I 'm not sure how I'm going to do in this 69 format . I guess I'll find out in about 8 weeks . :)

I was thinking about trying a "starter abuse" theory. Carry nine pitchers, 3-4 S/R (e.g., Diercker) and a bunch of placeholders (who hopefully HAL would never/rarely use). Or maybe get a staff of 5-6 midpriced "value" non-"*"'s.

Then, I'd try to tweak the manager/player settings so the S/R studs will be used in relief in addition being starters. They'll be fatigued frequently, but what I'm wondering is if a fatigued Diercker, Niekro, etc. is better than the other available relievers in the game. I'm thinking it wouldn't be terribly difficult to get 375-400 innings out of a starter. The "@"'s on the 7 row on many of the cards is scaring me off this a little, though.

Would this work?

Like Coffee, 1969 was the first year i really payed any attention to baseball on the professional level, and it was the first season of Strat i ever played! A lot of fond memories, wasting hour after hour of my summer vacation managing my Big Red Machine (in it's infancy, but the signs were there!)....

I think it is great! I am totally PSYCHED to get started! We have a league that needs 3 more guys....Woodstock invitational, and the password is marijuana.....jump on in, and we can draft TONITE!! :)

Super-Starter

Postby MtheB » Thu Sep 22, 2005 3:45 pm

Tried the super-starter reliever paradigm in ATG2 with those Chicago Cubs killer starters, and despite everything I tried, it wouldn't work the way I would have hoped.
Reulbach put up excellent numbers, but just didn't get the saves I would have expected.

Did you have the rotation set in manager settings? I think if you set those, HAL will use those starters in relief only in emergencies.

Had Drysdale (yuk) in ATG, and HAL loved the heck out of him for the first couple of series. He probably would've pitched in a 80 or so games with 40 starts had I not set the rotation in the manager settings (in hindsight, I should've just dropped Drysdale).

Toi San,

I am not sure why you would want to try a starter abuse theory in the 1969 game. As it stands now you can load up on a rotation with S8/S9 starters that will only leave probably 320 relief innings on the entire season. Why would you want to reduce the effectiveness of the other 1100 innings your starters will throw, just to get an ace in there for the remaining 320.

Considering the depth of defense at SS and 2B, there are a LOT of gbA's on the hitting cards!

Excited about the new league but it has flaws for sure...

You better have a great draft or it will be tough. It is hard for me to understand this league and the 2005 league. It seems like in ATGII, there wwould be more options, more 1's, more good *pitchers and defense. Overall, not too impressed, yet....
