You can take what ESPN says with a grain of salt .

ESPN = Eastern Sports Propoganda Network

Its Yankees - Red Sox - Giants - Jets all the time . Why do the other cities even have pro teams ?

i like Morgan AND Gammons...i probably tolerate Gammons homerism since i also like the Red Sox...there are no worse homer announcers than the characters that broadcast the Braves games... John Sterling and Michael Kay running a close 2nd for the Yankees... anyone ever heard a worse call then Sterlings "The Yankees Win" shouted in a very annoying vibrato.

As a die-hard Yankee fan I CAN NOT STAND Sterling. He actually is a BIGGER idiot than Gammons. Listening to him makes me want to puke. His, theres a FAST strike will on numerous occasions occur after ball 1 has been thrown. Eh, John a fast strike would happen on the first pitch. But he only likes hearing himself talk.

I'll buy this

-[quote:4153ee5095] Giants- Jets all the time .[/quote:4153ee5095]

but there's no way I'm buying this one. Hell Chris Berman is the bigesst Buffalo and San Fran homer in the world, and by extension, because he has relationships with Walshe's coaches, Philly, Green Bay and Seattle.

Until the Giants got Manning 2 years ago they were hardly mentioned.

Back in the early to mid 80's, when Gammons' Sunday column was in it's heyday...man, it was something to be anticipated, savored with a fresh cup of coffee.

Baseball writing at the time SUCKED. It was all hero-worship, I'm an insider and you're an idiot, so listen to me b.s. There was no Baseball Tonight, no Internet. Cable was in a minority of households, so the only highlights you saw were on the local news (very limited) or if you happened to catch 'This Week in Baseball'.

And then there was Gammons.

Every week he took you on a tour around the league, dishing rumors and analysis from the far reaches of the baseball world. He treated his readers as if they were (GASP!) intelligent. He talked about OBP before anyone knew what OBP was. He knew who Bill James was when few others did. He actually understood that Wade Boggs was a great leadoff hitter when most complained about Boggs' lack of speed. So many things we take for granted, Gammons was the first to write about in a newspaper. He was never a great writer, but he provided info like no other newspaper writer in the country. He was a freakin' oasis.

He's not a great fit for TV. He lisps. He's a homer. But every Sunday he does a 20 minute segment on the Boston radio station, and I always tune in. It's kind of like watching a Yastrzemski or Seaver at age 40- he's not close to what he used to be, but you tune in. For nostalgia, and for the fleeting glimpses of former greatness.

Hey, no one stays at their peak forever, not even sportswriters. But every sportswriter in the country, whether they know it or not, whether they blog, write for magazines, or the paper, owes a huge debt to Peter Gammons. And 99% can't come close to filling his shoes.

THAT'S why he's in the Hall of Fame.

Good post Pope.

I don't hate Gammons just because he roots for the wrong team. 8)

Nice to see some action on the boards. I guess we just need to pick more fights with each other to keep it interesting. Let's try to quit being so cordial around here. It's makin' me sick. :)

I completely agree with pope. When I lived in Boston in the early 1980's, Gammons' column in [i:9f149d493f]The Boston Globe[/i:9f149d493f] was like nothing else around. He used unparalleled efforts and research into getting information from inside baseball.

It's some twenty years later, and I'm no longer the Mets fan college kid in Boston, but rather someone who works with professional baseball and other sports. I've had the good fortune to work with Peter Gammons on several occasions, and can offer some insight. In my perception, Peter seems like a grown-up who was the geeky math kid who figured out batting averages for his favorite MLB players. He is a huge baseball fan. Heck, that background sounds like most of us Strat players!

I've seen how Peter works, and he still works harder than the other reporters getting information from inside sources.

I agree that he does not come across TV as pretty and personable as most other reporters. I've always found him looking like a print reporter on television. I'm finally used to him in the Baseball Tonight studio (since his insight is worthwhile), but I am not used to seeing him sitting in the stands like the Average Joe.

My favorite field guy for ESPN is still Gary Miller. Gary could talk to the shortstop about his hitting streak, as well as tell us how bad the knackwurst taste at the concession stand.

[quote:5685c70fee]If I have to suffer through Joe Morgan's circuitous discourse [/quote:5685c70fee]

Morgan is very knowledgable...but he just can't get to the point. Drives me crazy.

True, but the Braves announcers are employed by Turner broadcasting..for now...which owns(ed) the Braves for the sole purpose of broadcasting Braves games. Gammons is employed by a national company responsible for reporting baseball on a national level....not just New England.

Rank( I mean Frank)...quit agreeing with me or I'm going to have to post my thoughts in code. :P

As a Mets fan,

I long for the days of Lindsey Nelson and Ralph Kiner.

There was nothing better than seeing your favorite players, still in uniform, on Kiner's Korner.

Of course, Kiner was toasted during his segments.
