Pope Mollusk is correct. As a Boston resident, in the 70's Gammons' Sunday article was to other articles what Bonds was the last two years to other hitters. In his own category, way above the rest. I like him in Studio and haven't seen him yet on game broadcasts.

Re: Peter Gammons, I came to realize a couple of years ago that he never criticizes anyone. In addition, Peter is not someone where the glass is half empty or half full... the glass is always 110% full (as evidenced by the Bergeron comment above). I do enjoy listening to Gammons, but I think he works best in the studio and will not come across as well with his reports from the stands.

Re: Joe Morgan... Joe was a HOF player and is a well-spoken person... BUT I don't know if I ever agree with any of his analysis as it is rarely supported by the facts. Joe also has an annoying habiot of telling you 5 times what you are going to see in a replay before the replay is shown. Then, as you watch the replay, you realize that the replay does not show the same thing that Morgan is saying. For example, the other night Joe talked about a player hitting an inside pitch and the K-Zone replay showed a pitch on the outer half of the plate. Miller rarely challenges him on this.

Also, here is a link to a thread that I started re: a Joe Morgan comment made during August 2005:

http://forums-beta.sportingnews.com/viewtopic.php?p=87560&highlight=joe+morgan

Here is a copy paste of my observation:

[quote:b960ff275c]Watching tonight's Yankee game, Morgan says the Yanks hitters have 11 walks to 1 by the Angels hitters. Morgan says it is because the Yankees have veteran hitters.

Excuse me for wondering, but Joe wouldn't consider the following hitters to be veterans?
Vlad
Finley
Garret Anderson
Cabrera
Kennedy
Erstad

I really wish that Jon Miller would occassionally challenge Morgan for the things that he says and that many of them are not supported by any facts[/quote:b960ff275c]

I've never liked Gammons, not so much for his personality, biasness, etc., but for simply knowing what he's talking about, which 90% of the time he doesn't have a clue.

For example, if you listen to him on [i:30c4140096]Baseball Tonight[/i:30c4140096], whatever player has a great day that's who he promotes as the next Babe Ruth. Anyone can have a good day, it's what they do the other 161 games that count.

Regarding Joe Morgan, I like him ok. Not saying he's terrible, but no accolades either. Without Jon Miller, who compliments him well, he might be hanging on by a thread.

I've said it b4 in these forums, the announcer I dislike the most is Skip Carey. He goes out of his way to try and be unbias, but he actually favors the other team. A home-town announcer needs to pull for his own team more. Also, he's always saying things that irk me.

Good discussion. I hadn't paid that much attention to Morgan's inaccuracies, and agree he takes a long route to the ball, so to speak.

That said, I'm going to be a bit of a homer myself & say 1) not sure it's really Jon Miller's job to correct him on the air (I am sure he would do it off the air rather than on) and 2) regardless of who he's paired with, I would say Miller is the best play-by-play guy of our generation, if not all time.

Before you start on that, yes, I've heard some of the all-time greats like Scully & Jack Buck, and I put Miller in that class if not better.

I grew up on Miller listening to Orioles games in the 80s - he started with them in their last title year in '83, and '79-89 were my prime years listening to the O's. Then when I moved to the West Coast in '97, Miller happened to get hired by the Giants to do their games, so yeah, I've got a bias.

But I like Miller because he's a throwback in the sense that he'll let the game speak for itself when it needs to, and when he does say something that goes beyond just reporting factually what is happening, it almost always adds entertainment value. I like the fact that he's the only announcer I've ever heard who consistently gets Latino names right, but he's self-deprecating enough to over-pronounce them at times, so that you know he's making fun of his own accuracy - you can almost hear him winking at you in those moments, when he goes tongue-in-cheek with his listeners. Doing stuff like that, he creates (ok, let the jokes fly here) a kind of intimacy with the audience that I just don't see anywhere else. And he knows baseball inside & out, period. Huge fan of the game. I am just glad he's got national exposure over the last 15 yrs with ESPN, no one more deserving of the job.
