Smalley or no?

If you can't get a decent hitting one or two, then the answer is definitely yes. He's a SS that gets on base, favors RHP, doesn't really have a bad card and hits for power. In a hitter's park, I would rarely if ever take guys like Oquendo, Concep or Burleson over him.

In my short time here, I have tried to follow the advice of the vets in only playing "1"s or "2"s at SS but I have seen some people succeed with some "3"s. Ended up with Smalley instead of Ripken and am plaing in a division with 2 Riverfronts, Wrigley (me) and anaheim and there are no "2" SS on the waiver wire (uribe, Gagne, Dunston). If ever there was a time to test out Smalley I guess this is it. Or do a majority of you vets out there still think I should go with Uribe or whatever other scrappings I can get post-waivers?

Here's a current Kingdome team, a semi's losing Fenway team and an 83 game winning Anaheim team with Smalley. You're in a perfect situation for Smalley. If he gives up some runs, he'll more than make them up with your park and the others in your division. Guys like Uribe, UL, etc., would be a waste (unless you could use the extra $ elsewhere).

Defense is a team concept. You can have some 3's and 4's if the rest of the defense is better than average. Pair Smalley with a good 2b and you'll be Ok.

well, the team is "4" free (although Tettlton, Molitor and Singleton won't be making the play of the week anytime soon), unless I end up with Tartabull or Jackson or similar in RF and I do have the game's best 2B: Remy.

I have 2nd waiver pick and will get either Clemens or Brett, so I got that going for me (Evans (the RF), Gwynn and Hersheiser are also available!). 1st pick (Darth Ruvo) already has Schmidt and Ripken to DH (Trammel to play SS) so I will probably get Brett (unless he trades Ripken or plays Brett at 1B which is entirely possible) but I am not sure I care.

I could throw enough Roy Smalley numbers at you to make you puke. You will know before game 42 if Smalley is worth keeping. You could do a lot worse there.

Get a backup for the inevitable injury though. Any 2 will do or even Owen or Stillwell.

How about getting a cheap 2 to replace him in late innings (Schofield, Uribe, Guillen)? That's what I do. Not sure if it makes much difference but it makes me feel a little less queasy about having a 3 at short. In a home run park, I think Smalley's third to only Trammel and Yount, offensively. I've got what looks like his worst or second worst card right now, and he's still contributing for my Jack Murphy team (.786 OPS, 16 homers in 96 games).

Where do you think Ripken fits in the SS hiearchy? He seems expensive for only 3 good years- I would consider the 8L year a "bad" year.
I have been offered him for Singleton, but now everyone has convinced me that I should stick with Smalley (and I really like Singleton).
