Trying to understand HAL's move here...

*** TOP OF INNING 8 ***
0 M.Mora 6 Line Out b-0
1 L.Harris 4 Strike Out b-0
2 E.Garabito 4 Single b-1
SUBSTITUTE PR- Angel Berroa
2 1 O.Hudson 7 Single 1-2 b-1
SUBSTITUTE P - Tom Gordon
2 12 A.Everett 6 Strike Out b-0

Garabito is my DH vs. RH's. He's checked for "Don't PH for vs. RH's". The pinch runner option in the manager settings is blank. Berroa is a 1-15 runner while Garabito is 1-12.

Tom Gordon is pitching against me, FWIW.

Now I don't mind having a faster runner on the paths, but that option is blank in the settings. Garabito is a much better hitter as well.

So what happens...2 innings later...

*** TOP OF INNING 10 ***
0 M.Mora 6 Ground Out b-0
1 L.Harris 4 Walk b-1
1 1 A.Berroa 3 Ground Out Double Play 1-o b-0

Thanks HAL. A little more K-Y jelly next time please...

In my opinion you really can't blame HAL for moves that cost you after 9 innings. I doubt that HAL thinks about what would happen if the game goes extra innings.

But why pinch run for Garabito?

I would guess HAL is trying to score the go ahead run. Its the top of the 8th so there's a good chance Garabito's spot in the order is not going to come up again. HAL probably went with the best runner he had available so he went with Berrora's 15 rating over Garabito's 12.

Also, I think HAL uses the pinch runner under manager setting to select which player to use as a pinch runner. Not to determine if he should use a pinch runner.

Actually that makes me wonder if HAL checks the pinch runner listed under manager strategy to see if he is better a runner. I wonder what would happen if you put a slug in (e.g. Pratt) as your preferred pinch runner. Would HAL actually uses him as pinch runner or would he do a check to see if he is faster than the runner on base, which would mean you would never have anyone pinch run for.

Nice thought hendrix. Try that and report back to us. (Notice how I didn't volunteer to try it myself  )

I had a '69 team where Hal pinch ran one of the Alou brothers who was a 1-15 for Petrocelli in a late inning situation! I still won a few innings later in extras, but gee, Rico is a 1-12, so I lost the most expensive guy on my team for three running chances? Yikes.
