I think some people are playing more for the future than the combo you spoke of.
Verlander and Cain are blue chip prospects that already have ML starting jobs.
Yes, McCarthy will have a useful card, but his road to the rotation is blocked right now.
2 years from now, Verlander and Cain could be the SP* gems we all covet -- with many yeasr ahead. It's a crapshoot to be sure (as it always is drafting pitchers as opposed to hitters) but that's the fun.
I just think that entices some (those of us that see more the long road) as opposed to others (who are more interested in immediate returns).
Different strokes for different folks is all.
For what it's worth, McCarthy was my next choice if Cain had been gone.
